Solved BSOD While Gaming 0xA0000001 Atikmdag.sys

I put in my stuff for the calculator and got about 420W recommended.
I have only 4 fans, 1 CD driver, and a Western Digital 7200rpm hard drive.
No SSD, or fan controllers or any fancy stuff like that.

Not sure why mine was a bit lower but I still think 630W is plenty. I also found this article upon looking up my PSU.

Rosewill Green Series 630 W (RG630-S12) Power Supply Review | Hardware Secrets

Defiantly though, this being my first PC build ever and not knowing much, I maybe would have gotten a better power supply. I would like to point out again that I do get these BSOD's when under heavy load. Temps are quite remarkably low and I've tested with multiple programs. Like I said CPU never goes past 49C on full load, and GPU never goes past 69C. But since I've only gotten these blue screen under load it is just odd that I didn't get one after a few hours of having my GPU running at 100% on a 3D test (believe it was FurMark something?). That is why I believe it is software related as my crash dump says or faulty psu. I can maybe see about testing another psu if I can get my hands on one, but I can't test any drivers until I get home in about 4 hours. Thanks so far!

Hum you mentioned you ran a memory test a while back and I am just wondering if this might e an idea to run

MEMTEST

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html thisone you will need to make a bootable disk set the BIOS to optical (or USB ifpreferred) boot the machine and let it run for at LEAST 8 passesunless the errors come up straight away. Takes fair time to complete andsome leave it running overnight.

Ifyou do get errors then you will need to redo the memtest with eachseparate stick to find the culprit. Having said the it could be a slot problem

Chives, if you would please go to C:/Windows/Minidump and send us the last bsod dumps wou have had since posting the first one. If you look at the numbers, they are the dates and time of the BSOD. You will have to give admin permissions. Copy them to your desktop, zip them up and upload the Zip file with your next post, or whenever you get home. Also, I would like you to do something else that could cause the problem or rule out a component.

Next I would like you to run memtest86+. It is quite a long test as it needs to be run for 8 complete passes all at the same time. Please download the test from Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool. Although the names are similar, this test is much better than memtest86. It needs to be run for 8 complete passes or until you get an error. If you get an error, stop the test. In the link above if you will go down to the middle of the page you can download either the ISO file which needs to be burned to a CD by Windows image burner or any disk image burner you choose. Or you can download the auto installer for USB Flash drives to run it from a flash drive. Whichever you choose, be sure to download the zip file and extract it. Each Pass consists of 10 tests, each pass checks a different thing and each test checks different things. It takes a minimum of 8 passes to completely check the ram, more passes are better. It will take quite a number of hours to do the test, so it is usually better run over night. To run the test, boot from the media you chose and don't press any keys, the test will run automatically and will continue running until you tell it to stop. It will tell you how many passes it has run and how many errors are found. If it finds errors they will show up as red lines at the bottom of the page and you can stop the test at that point. There is no point in running the test after an error. Any error is a fail. It will take somewhere around 9-10 hours to check my computer with 8 GB of ram. If you have more it will take much longer.

Okay, will defiantly have to run the memtest overnight. Will send bsoddump as soon as I get home. Also wanted to thank you all again, it is comforting to have others help me try and figure this thing out. Before making this thread though I had tried this thinking it would work:

FIX BSOD ATI Blue screen on atikmdag.sys solved fix - Guru3D.com Forums

But I think I screwed that up because windows had failed to boot, but a system restore fixed everything there. But the program "WhoCrashed" after that showed BSOD's from weeks ago and no trace of the recent ones. I will need to run Far Cry again and let it BSOD to get a fresh dump XD, shouldn't be too hard to do.

Chives worth remembering too that RAM failures can also be due to faulty slots too - so if you have four sticks for example if you do get errors and then test each stick separately say in slot one and no errors come up then it may mean that slot 2 or 3 or 4 may be faulty and that requires a lot more testing:(

PS Meant to add that this could just mean that the offending slot just needs cleaning and I have a little method I use to do juts that hopefully the sticks will be the problem and not the slots:)

Currently I have 2 4GB sticks, so if it is a slot issue, there are 2 other slots... Though my 212 EVO might be blocking some slots, I don't remember.

So I guess to recap. I need to mess around with a few driver versions and see if that resolves anything. Then I need to run memtest tonight, and if that comes up error free then I can try another PSU. And if the problem persist I can either buy a 760, or send in my card. But at this point who knows, it could be something else entirely.

Chives, I have found in this type error it is not a 'one size fits all' error. They can be caused by many many things. So, there is not 1 solution to the problem. We have a progression we go through to do our best to test everything we can in an effort to single out the troubled part or driver. Even software can cause this problem, so it is difficult to figure out. We will stick with you until we find the problem or throw up our hands. So, don't be concerned about that. We only ask that you stick with us and follow the progression we ask and don't try things on your own, without discussing it with us first. The only real reason for that is we can't be of much assistance unless we know exactly what it going on. We aslo cannot see and hear what is happening with your computer. Therefore, we have to depend on you to be out eyes and ears and let us know everything you can about what is happening. I hope this makes sense to you. If not, never hesitate to ask questions. I never mind anyone asking why are we doing this or your explanations are not clear. Any question you have, please ask.

I would suggest you run the ram test in the slots you are using. If they fail there, it will shed much light on what caused your BSODs, and at that time we will deal with the other 2 slots. As of right now, the other 2 slots are not in the equation as they are not being used, so cannot be a part of the problem. I would also suggest that you monitor your CPU and GPU temps constantly and let us know how they are as you use the computer.

And if you are overclocking anything, please set everything back to default values, at least until we can get you stable.

I guess I can give a bit more information here wether it be useful or useless. Also nothing is overclocked unless you count the factory OC on the GPU.

First off, when removing the drivers that I currently had this beeping had went away that seems to come from my GPU and the noise was there since the day I put the PC together. It is quite quiet and can only be heard when the room has minimal background noise. The sound can best be described as a mild selective coil whine. I'm pretty sure that it isn't coil whine though. It can be heard when scrolling a web page for example and as soon as I stop scrolling it goes away. When I minimize/maximize a tab it also does the short whine noise. And the oddest thing about this, is that when I launch a game, the sound seems to almost diminish. Just weird, but I've since disregarded this but only bring this up because it may or may not be useful.

To be honest though, I don't think it is temperature related. I have HWMonitor open most of time and never noticed anything out the ordinary. Though I will still provide the temps that I get when I get on today.

And as you said, there is no one fix. I have looked at so many other threads with this stop error and you are defiantly right, they all had a different method that solved the issue or gave up, or never replied back.

And don't worry, I'm not going to change anything unless instructed to. Since I started this thread I have only tried the different drivers. But once again for the sound thing, is something like that normal or should I be concerned?

-Thanks!

No, it's not normal. I believe you said you built it yourself, so you would be comfortable working inside a case. My first thing, other than memtest would be to open the side of the case and identify exactly where the 'whine' is coming from. Now, you first described it as a beep, then as a whine. That makes a big difference, which is it? also, How much time do you have to send components back to where you purchased them? You will fare much better, sending them back to the place of purchase than the manufacturers. Trust me, I have a lot of experience on that one.

It has been just under 2 months, so I can no longer bring back the parts. But I pretty much can pinpoint this sound to the gpu itself, like site emitting the noise from somewhere inside it. And beep was sort the wrong word choice. What I should have said was the it sounds like coil whine, but it does it in a beep formation yet high pitched. I have heard of the beeping sound on pc startup that sort of tells you how your pc is doing, like when I turn on my PC I hear the one standard load beep. But the GPU noise upon getting to windows login will make noise that sounds like a mellow coil whine fading in and out and a moderately fast speed, that is probably the best description with slightly higher pitched sound. I have actually taken of the side panel, but I cannot pinpoint the sound, it just seems to be radiating from the GPU. I tried recording the sound with no luck a while back. I will say I didn't notice the sound until a week after it was built. I can confidently say though this noise is not coming from the PSU. Of course I still have the standard warranty from gigabyte but that would be a pain to bring back as you've said. But I won't actually take anything back without saying so first, but I will try to take off the cover again today and see if I can't get a better description of the sound.

Also I guess it doesn't hurt to say that I have been playing LoL on the PC since it was built. Not once have a ever BSODed while playing. So it is more likely to BSOD the more demanding the game, which to my knowledge usually does point to a hardware issue? I will try and find this video of some guys GPU coil whining which sound exactly like mine did, but of course his was a constant whine, while mine is random and seems to diminish while under load. It's just quite a confusing thing and I feel bad because I am inexperienced with these sort of things so I cannot accurately describe scenarios like this. Thanks so far.

I won't be getting home for a while here so I won't be able to test any other drivers, but I do think that my power supply could defiantly be an issue.

Sapphire Radeon R9 270X 2GB TOXIC Video Cards in CrossFire - Power Consumption Test

This shows the power consumption and a it defiantly goes all the up to 500w. If that is the case, then this may be an easy fix. I just need to get a spare power supply. I will try other drivers though when I arrive home. Thank you for all the help so far.
It did not appear to me that you use Crossfire .... I noticed only one GPU there. And in this case your 630 Watts GPU should be good.

Have you tried any other version of the display driver? Driver 13.12 WHQL or higher will work for your GPU.

And applying another version of the display driver is the thing that you need to do first. Because your issue, a stop 0xA0000001 BSOD points to the AMD display environment and nothing else. It is a bugcheck inherent with ADM display.

Well, only you can determine if it is a coil noise and the fan spinning up. But, if it's not a fan, I would be calling Gigabyte. With it shutting down during high stress sounds more like a PSU issue to me, as long as the wires are fully seated on both ends. As you put it under more stress, it demands more power.

Oh yeah, that was going to be the first thing I do when I get home, which should be in an hour. I will get back to you all once I try out the drivers.

-Thanks

And about the sounds, i don't think it is a coil whine, as it doesn't have any traits that exhibit it. It just sounds like it if that makes sense. I think I will call Gigabyte and ask about that one though... It is a very odd noise.

Report back with any other issue after applying another version of the display driver.

Until and unless there is a BSOD of a different line (not "probably caused by atikmpag.sys"), stay with display troubleshooting only.

About the sound .... is it the sound of spinning of the HDDs?

I had a friend come over once and did say that it might be that, I'm just going to take off the cover and listen once more. You may be right about that, I am paranoid about little things. But as you said I will just stick to trying out the other drivers and then running memtest tonight. I also know my case is sort of cramped so sound may be playing an illusion on my ears. I also cannot stress enough how grateful I am to have so many people helping me with this so far, thanks!

In every winter, I experience the sound of disc spinning. It is loud just after startup, and after 5-6 minutes it becomes much less. But that is a seasonal effect only I am experiencing over years, irrespective of the computers make/model.

If it is just the disc spinning, tighten the screws holding the HDDs with the stand.

After applying another version of the display driver, better you let the computer crash. Do th most crash prone functions like playing games or watching online videos etc. I mean, activity is needed there to test the stability.

Run memtest86+ in the night, when you will be sleeping.

Here are my temps by the way, I have a live stream in the back ground and a few webpages open. This is what it sort of stays at, drops like 1C-2C when I close tabs. This is sort of what I consider my idle temps. I am about to install previous drivers and try FarCry3. Will get back to you all soon.
