I have been tooling around on this Dell OptiPlex 580 off and on for about 12 months. It has crashed about every two weeks since it has come out of the box. After much pleading from the owner, I reluctantly agreed to reinstall the OS today (I have always suspected third-party software issues, so I did not wholeheartedly believe this would solve the problem). After reinstalling the OS, I got started on applying updates (currently UTD from Windows Update), installing antivirus, and the like. The PC came with Office 2010 Professional installed, but since I could not find a disk for it, I downloaded a free trial. After entering the product key, the PC seemed to be chugging through the normal installation when, BAM! BSOD! I am not sure whether an actual problem with the installation process caused this, or if this is just more of the same old story, and we should expect these crashes to continue as always. Below I have listed the BugCheck info from the crash:

Probably caused by : win32k.sys ( win32k!xxxInternalDoPaint+19 )
Followup: MachineOwner
---------

I have seen the old win32k.sys listed as a probable cause, but "( win32k!xxxInternalDoPaint+19 )" is a new one for me. I am going to go ahead and run Memtest86 and check the hard drive while I wait for a response, but I should mention that I've done these things before with this PC and I was never able to detect any errors. I am just hoping that someone might be able to determine the root cause of this while I catch a few hours of sleep while the diagnostics run.

Regards,
JMT

Ran Memtest overnight and did a HDD diagnostic this morning. No errors found. I am going to continue to work on this rebuild and see if I can't get to a solution for this crash. Pictures attached.
