BSOD Win 7 Ultimate While Opening Desktop Items

I have a two (2) year old Lenovo E420 Laptop running Win 7 Ultimate, 4 GB memory and a 420Gb hard disk (no SSD). This machine has been a rock of reliability all these years; not one issue until today. And yes, it's always been updated regularly, scanned regularly, etc. so it's pretty clean.

Today I was on my desktop where I had a couple of Excel and Word files and folders. Went to mouse click a folder and the glorious BSOD appears. Wrote a mini dump, which told me it was a 'Bad Pool Header'. Happened four (4) times today and talk about frustrating!

So, I joined seven forums and followed the instructions to send up my mini dump and other things your utility extracts from my machine. I'm actually writing this from the machine; I just am NOT going to touch desktop menu items until we can figure this one out.

Obviously, a HUGE thank you from anyone that can shed some light on this problem!

Many thanks,

PH

KoolKat77,

thank you for the followup. I'll disable startups tomorrow morning and then do a memtest, per recommendations. I did want to ask, what is tutorial #3? I went to the tutorials, I see they're labeled, but don't see a #3?

koolkat77,

thought I'd update you and let you know where the problem is at. laptop stayed basically stable during testing...checking startup items found a couple of old, dead links to programs that had long been uninstalled. also found out that Microsoft update had four 'hung' updates; once I applied the updates, started running av tests using windows security suite and malware bytes...mwb found four Trojans on old backup folder for my son. got rid of the Trojans, applied the MS updates and machine became stable again. Do I trust it? probably not, and will continue with the memory testing and finish that out, but as of the past two days, it's been rock steady.
