Not really. There was some indication of I/O errors. But that could be because of Acronis. I don't believe we have run a hard drive diagnostic test. What is the manufacturer of your Mate's hard drive? We can try that first, but probably Acronis will have to go eventually.

We also need to remember Acronis has showed up in more than one dump file.

wait, what noise was it making?

a screeching sound. a bit reminiscent of a dial up modem back in the day. at first it was now and then. but when the pc was under load, it was a continuous wailing sound.

it was because of this we decided to reinstall windows with a digital river iso and since then, no sound problems, although some bluescreens...

Try Seatools for DOS. Seagate owns Samsung mechanical hard drive section now. I don't know of a test specifically for Samsung drives since the buy out. There probably is one, I have just never seen it. But Seatools is pretty good anyway. Use the DOS test and the instructions are below in the link I'm giving you. SeaTools for DOS | Seagate

Hi Buddy. Sorry for the delay. I burnt sea tools to a dvd yesterday and gave it to my friend this morning. Hes not a techy, so even changing boot options may be an issue, but I think ive explained it well and answered the questions he had. I hope to hear back from him soon, and when I do, ill let you know. Ive also told him how to turn off verifier.

OK, great. Don't worry about me not hearing from you. I just wanted to make sure things were going OK. The screeching noise I would look at the PSU or graphics card first. Those are the most likely to make that kind of noise. Of course, any case fan can too.

long test completed. screenshot of the results attached. from looking at it, doesnt appear to be any errors...
i think graphics card could be the culprit as when it was making serious noises, it had the wrong grpahics card drivers on the machine. or he had installed the wrong ones over the top of an existing installation of graphics card drivers.
when it was making noises, i popped round his house, opened up the tower, hoovered out dust etc which was clogging fans. i also removed graphics card and found some apps for stress testing the pc, it still made noises when graphics cars was out.
recently, no noises.
i think he wants to keep acronis, so i will send the blue screen logs to them, and ask what advice they can give, because its pretty piss poor to charge £40 for it, if it buggers up windows 7...

do you have any more suggestions, how do i test the psu?

Well good. Is that the only drive? In the dump files, I keep seeing just references to NTFS file system. That is why I asked, so I don't know unless it is a driver. DV should have caught it if it was though.
