Is driver verifier enabled?
I think it's driver related.

Is driver verifier enabled?
I think it's driver related.

There's little useful information. Can you please enable driver verifier by following these instructions.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/101379-driver-verifier-enable-disable.html

crashed on start up, couldnt boot with verifier running. tried several times. "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer."

"The IO manager has detected a violation by a driver that is being verified. The faulty driver that is being verified must be debugged and replaced with a working version."

how would i go about locating and fixing the faulty driver? i have all of the information that was displayed but im not sure if it's useful.

Can you boot into safe mode? If so upload the dump files and go to start, verifier.exe then delete all settings.
You will have to do a system restore from the advanced boot settings (F8). Then you'll have to go onto the start menu, type "msconfig". Then go onto boot and untick all startup programs that aren't your AV.

And yes, it is very useful, driver Verifer has located the driver that's crashing the system (hopefully), it should tell us in the .dmp files.

problem is, i was able to boot up right after by using "use last known good configuration." but no actual dump file was created, or its not where it should be. and as for msconfig, it is set up with selective boot, as it has been for the past year, and nothing starts except my graphics drivers, Microsoft, and Dropbox. but without a dump file how do i find out whihc one is having a problem?

we already went through this.

Ah right sorry.
Did you make sure you didn't enable any drivers from MS, Unknown, or Macrovision?
If yes then it is probably driver related.

Are you doing a particular activity when your PC crashes?

What anti virus have you got?

Without dump files this becomes a guessing game. It becomes much more difficult to find the source of the problem.

AVG, no particular activity, just opening chrome, or opening an application such as quickbooks, or something like that. or alt tabbing back into a program or web page. and i did everything you told me to previously with drivers, including trying enabling specific drivers. and i know, why would my computer not create dump files?

Sometimes the BSOD gets interrupted so it can't create the dump files.
I recommend removing AVG and installing Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes instead.

Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows

Malwarebytes | Free Anti-Malware & Internet Security Software

Typically I don't use an anti-virus, I don't go anywhere to get viruses, and I know I sound like one of my typical customers, but I really don't. The only sites I use are youtube, google, wikipedia, and forums like this. generally I keep a pretty close eye on each and every process and service that's running on my computer at all times. It's kind of a habit from times when i had nothing better to do, so i'm used to keeping up with it. As for windows not generating a dump file, is there a max size to the minidump folder? And I just had yet another BSOD, this one was win32k.sys service exception.

win32k.sys is the windowing driver, that isn't the cause but it is generally graphics related, system service exceptions are also common with graphics options.

I recommend updating/rolling back your driver.

Depending on your GPU I advise following either of these instructions.

How-To Install AMD Catalyst? Drivers For A Windows® Based System

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/327414-nvidia-drivers-avoid-problems.html#post2740806

I knew that was one of the issues, then i rolled my graphics drivers back and the problem persisted.

Will do, but I haven't gotten any new dump files since you had me attempt driver verification and run memtest86

Still no dump files, no BSOD's either, and the only difference is that i installed a new hard drive, but the OS is still running from the old one.
