Hi there, I need help with constant BSODs.

My computer is only a few months old, and when I tried to run a certain program (World of Wracraft....don't judge :P) it would sometimes either freeze, lock up or crash. A friend of mine took a look at things, updated all my drivers, checked my temperatures and tested my RAM (which was good) and the problem seemed to go away. However, the past week, I've been getting blue screens, with increasing frequency, even when I'm not playing WoW.

At first the BSODs stated "Driver_IRQL_not_Less_or_Equal" and said something about 'cng.sys'.
When I tried to boot up once or twice I got another BSOD with the error 'Bad pool header' or something along those lines.
And today, after I tried a system restore I recieved "System_Service_exception" and something about 'win32k.sys'.
Can anyone help me? :(

First off start by upgrading those old drivers.

Latest drivers: ATI Radeon

Remove old drivers first, then run Driver Sweeper

Your fine, Sorry I wasn't more detailed for you. Simply Go to

Start
type Device Manager Click Enter
You will then Double Click Display Adapters
Right Click on your ATI HD 5500 Series then Click Uninstall
You will be prompted to Confirm Removal

Once done Refer to http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...eft-over-files-after-uninstalling.html?filter

On removing the rest of any drivers left.

Then you want to reboot the system, and go to ATI Radeon to get the latest drivers

Then Follow Prompts to Install new drivers. Reboot and see if anything is better, ive noticed there may be lots more going on, Im still looking over your dump files.

Tony is correct. You have out of date drivers loaded on your system. Outdated drivers can and do cause conflicts, memory corruption, and BSOD's. One of these drivers is way obsolete. Update these drivers or uninstall the software they are associated with.
Afc.sys Wed Jul 12 01:48:20 2006 - Arcsoft(R) ASPI Shell (CD/DVD program). http://www.arcsoft.com/public/download.asp. Uninstall this software. It is XP software and obsolete.

athrx.sys Tue Jun 09 20:30:43 2009 - Atheros network adapter driver. Atheros Communications.

Rt64win7.sys Thu Feb 26 04:04:13 2009 - Realtek 8101E/8168/8169 Network Driver Interface Specification 6.20 64-bit Driver. Latest PCIe GBE (GigaBit Ethernet) drivers here: Realtek.
One of your dumps indicates a video card error. Uninstall Arcsoft and update the remaining two drivers. Reboot and see how your system does. If you get another BSOD, upload it to us and we will look at hardware. Post back and update us.

I started by removing the ATI driver as instructed. However, the link for the driver sweeper program was 404'ing for me, so I moved to the next step and downloaded and installed the new ATI driver.

I updated the realtek driver, but when trying to update the atheros driver, an error pops up informing me the installer can't find the installer cna't find the ethernet controller on my system.

As for the Arcsoft software, I couldn;t find any on my system; is it possible that I previously had arcsoft software inslatted, and uninstalled it imporperly, leaving the driver behind?

Thanks

Yes, it is possible that it is a left over driver accompanied by a left over registry key. [FONT=&quot]Create a restore point. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers, locate the driver file, and rename it from .sys to .old. Reboot and the driver will not load. This will break whatever software or hardware the driver is associated with.

Do you use Ethernet or are you wireless? If you do not use Ethernet, you can rename that driver as described above. Keep in mind that renaming will cause the Ethernet adapter not to work.

Restore point has been created, and athrx.sys has been changed to athrx.old. However, odly enough, I can't even find afc.sys (?).
The system hasn't crashed since I've posted here, but then again I haven't tried WoW yet.

Thanks

Do a search of your C: drive for afc.sys. Make sure your computer is set to show system files and folders. I believe this driver is located in c:\Windows\System32\Drivers.

I found afc.sys in c:\Windows\sysWOW64\drivers, and changed it from .sys to .old.
I began having connection issues after rebooting, and found that the connection issues went away when I changed athrx back to a .sys, so that is what it currently is.
I just recently experienced 2 more BSODs, one stating bad pool header the other driver irql not less or equal, and have followed the instructions to post the information on them.

Your arthrx.sys is a LAN driver rather than and Ethernet driver. That was my mistake. You will need to update this driver. Outdated LAN drivers frequently cause problems with Win 7.

Your dump bugCheck 19, Bad Pool Header, blames your video driver, atikmdag.sys. The dump also indicates memory corruption. Your other dump, bugcheck D1, DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL, blames a Windows system driver, tunnel.sys, and also indicates memory corruption. Both dumps show these outdated drivers loaded on your system. I see that Rt64win7.sys is updated.
Afc.sys Wed Jul 12 01:48:20 2006 - Arcsoft(R) ASPI Shell (CD/DVD program). http://www.arcsoft.com/public/download.asp. Uninstall this software. It is XP software and obsolete.

athrx.sys Tue Jun 09 20:30:43 2009 - Atheros network adapter driver. Atheros Communications.
Do a search of your C: drive using Windows Explorer for afc.sys. Rename every instance of this driver you find to ._old rather than just .old. I believe there is an update for the Atheros driver.

Because your video has been blamed, test your video card with Furmark following the instructions in this tutorial: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/100356-video-card-stress-test-furmark.html. Post back with your results.

Just to clearify before I proceed, am I looking to update "arthrx.sys" as in your last post or "athrx.sys", because I can't find arthrx.sys on my system while I can find athrx.sys.

thanks

I changed ever instance of afc.sys to afc._old, not afc.old.

I downloaded the latest driver for Atheros, and installed it.

I was performing a video card stress test with Furmark, when about 3 mins in I got a blue screen. I rebooted, and began to perform the steps for posting crash dump information, when I got another blue screen. I started in safe mode, performed the steps for compiling crash dump information, and will post that now.

In the mean time I'll try to run the video card stress test again.

Thanks

Good job with the drivers. All appear to be up todate.

I looked at your three most recent dumps, all dated 8 Jan. All three are showing memory corruption. Hold off on the video stress test for now and test your RAM with Memtest 86. Follow the instructions in this tutorial: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html. Memtest runs outside of Windows. Run Memtest from a cold boot after your computer has been off for an hour or two. Let it run for at least seven passes; this will take six to eight hours. Post back with your results.

By the time I saw your post I had ran the Furmark stability test for over 2 hours before I stopped it.

I ran Memtest86 as instructed, and almost righ away began recieving lots of errors. I followed the instructions and began testing the memory sticks one at a time. With only one stick in the first memory slot, the computer wouldnt start at all, just a blank screen. This was the same for the second memory stick in the first slot. However, both memory sticks perform 7 Memtest passes with no errors when placed in the second memory slot. I'm guessing the first memory slot on the mother board isn't working or something? I'm currently testing the other memory slots, but since both memory sticks placed in slot 2 completed 7 passes with no errors, does that mean the RAM sticks themselves are ok?

Updating the Memtest results.

I tried Memtest with my two sticks of RAM in slots 3 and 4 of my motherboard (the alternate recommended configuration), and started to recieve errors after a minute of runnning. So I tried memory stick 1 in slot 3, and it ran 7 passes just fine. I tried memory stick 1 in slot 4, and while it was able to start up and enter the Memtest, it began to recieve errors after a minute or so of runnning. I tried memory stick 2 in slot 3, and it ran for 7 passes with no errors, but then I tried memory stick 2 in slot 4 and it ran fine, but recieved errors when in slot 4.

So does this mean my RAM sticks are ok, but 2 slots (1 and 4) of my mother board aren't working properly?

Thanks

It appears to me that you are correct. The RAM sticks are OK. You either have two bad RAM slots or a bad memory controller. Either way, it is a motherboard issue. At least you know where your problem lies. I am sure this is not the news you wanted to hear. I guess the good news is that your video card is OK.
