BSODs and Freezing

Basic Information:
OS is Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit

It is not the the original installed OS on the system it previously had XP and I then purchased Windows 7 and did a reformat/fresh install of 7.

It was a retail upgrade disc I purchased through Windows

- What is the age of system (hardware)? 4 Years or so

- What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS? 2 years or so

So to explain the problem --

Last night I was using my computer as normal when suddenly it BSOD'd with an error message that I did not get the exact error message of. Since then any time I boot to normal mode I either get an IRQL_Not_Less_Or_Equal blue screen or a Reference_By_Pointer blue screen or it just freezes shortly after logging into windows. I've attempted to do a system restore with no luck, I've attempted to do startup recovery with no luck. When booting in safe mode it seems to work sometimes (I Haven't got boot into safe mode w/ networking to work yet). I've gotten the bsod in safe mode once or twice out of the 20 or so times I've gone or tried to go into safe mode and a few of the times it just freezes. I can get the computer to boot into normal mode only when I turn Diagnostic start up on.
If you need any further information please let me know ( I tried running perfmon /report but it was telling me path not found and wouldn't work)

Hi Matt and welcome

The first issue is sptd.sys. Used in alcohol and daemon tools it is a huge cause of BSOD's

Please remove any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%.

They use a driver, found in your dmp,sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs.

Use this SPTD uninstaller DuplexSecure - Downloads

when you're done you can use this Freeware MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM(MagicDisc) in its place.

Remove that and upload any further dmps if they occur.

Ok I've uninstalled Daemon Tools and have booted into normal mode w/ normal startup instead of diagnostic for the first time with no BSOD's yet. Will post again if the issue comes up again.

So i've gotten the computer back home now and it was booting ok as it was at the shop and I went through re-enabling services/programs ( for some reason almost all services aren't running like I don't have Aero and I can't use windows installer even though it isn't doing diagnostic startup anymore) and It BSOD'd on me a few more times including a new one "Page fault in nonpaged area". two of them even in safe mode when I was trying to turn off stuff I had enabled. Attached are the minidmps from them.

Apparently only a few services are running even though I haven't disabled any microsoft services - Although in msconfig I only see 4 different services under microsoft for some reason.

I was reading a different post on this forums about someone else with the IRQL bsod and used that TDSSKiller someone mentioned and it did find "Rootkit.win32.TDSS.tdl4" named "\HardDisk2" apparently. And then it saw SPTD.sys as a suspicious file (which I thought was removed when I uninstalled Daemon Tools but apparently not). Naturally i'm assuming I should use the cure option for the rootkit but should I delete the sptd.sys through this program because it defaulted to skip on that.

Edit: After deleting that rootkit I went back and re-enabled any services I might use as well as some of my programs on startup and it didn't blue screen like it had every time previously which I think is a good sign but now I still have the issue where for some reason only 4 out of all the windows services are starting and i'm only seeing those 4 microsoft services in msconfig ( Cryptographic Services, Group Policy Client, RPC Endpoint Mapper, and Task Scheduler) All 4 of which are on w/ just the GPC and RPC services actually running.

Edit2: I downloaded a set of default services registry entry from http://serviceseditor.com/# and have ran it on my machine. It replaced a large number of services and they are now starting ok however when I ran it it gave me the error message that it couldn't finish because some files were in use and apparently whichever ones were in use included some of the more important ones like windows installer. I tried running it in safe mode and got the same error.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I feel like a repair install would fix most of my current issues but they made it a lot more difficult than it was to do in XP. From what I read I need to either get a Win7 disc w/ sp1 on it or uninstall SP1 however when I go into add/remove updates it says I don't have any updates installed.

Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.
