BSODs randomly BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER

Full retail x64 Windows 7 Ultimate full retail. Install is a month or two old from an image backup of from an install in October of last year. I started having issues on my original install just out of the blue. I decided to start fresh with an install I know worked from an image, and am still having the same issues. Hardware is apx. 18 months old.

I am getting occasional lockups, but mostly BSOD's always related to BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER. I did have a Soundblaster USB soundcard installed thinking it was the issue, so I installed the ASUS PCI soundcard. The USB soundcard is unplugged now. I was also using a Griffin PowerMate USB volume knob thinking it might be the culprit and disconnected it. Using a fresh install without this device I am getting the BSOD's. Also, one day I came in to use the PC, and the mouse was frozen but the PC was still working. I unplugged the mouse and plugged it in another slot and it worked. A few days later, same issues...

Any help is appreciated.

I see you have an SSD installed. SSD drivers are a common cause of BSOD's, in particular Crucial M4's with outdated firmware. Make sure that the following is up to date:

• SSD Firmware
• BIOS Version
• Chipset Drivers
• Hard disk controller drivers/SATA drivers
• Marvell IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers (older drivers for these are especially problematic)

You will need to remove any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%. They use a driver that was found in your dump called sptd.sys which is notorious for causing BSOD's.Use the below SPTD uninstaller to uninstall the driver...

Just to test, unplug every USB device and restart your computer. Do you still get crashes?

How often do the crashes occur? What are you usually doing when it crashes?

Thanks for your feedback. I already have MagicISO installed, and to my recollection, have never had Daemon tools installed. Could the spdt.sys be a part of another program. Regarding the SSD, I bought an Intel based upon them being more reliable. I will be sure to check all of your suggestions.

But why does the BSOD keep pointing to a USB issue if non-usb things might be causing the problem?

The sptd.sys could still be part of another program so it is best to use the uninstaller to remove it.

As for the SSD, the drivers and/or firmware may still be causing problems so as a precaution it is necessary to upgrade the aforementioned drivers.

The BSOD may be pointing toward a USB issue but it is good to remove all other likely factors too. If anything they will help your computer run more smoothly in the future. You should also ntoe my last two suggestions in my previous post.
