Solved BT as an ISP in the UK

No I am not going to have a jibe at BT, in fact I find my service from them very good. What I'm looking for is members of this forum who are with BT as their ISP and would be willing to share experiences of activating alternate email addresses with Yahoo! It's just that I think I have found a bit of a bug in the system. BT have tried long and hard to solve it but admit they are unable to find the answer. Thanks in advance to anyone who kindly responds!

I'm with BT and like yourself find the service very good, although it isn't the cheapest on the market.

I currently have a BT email address as does my wife so would love to hear of the problem you are experiencing.

When you say alternate addresses, are you referring to BT accounts or a third party such as Outlook or Live Mail?

Thanks for your fast response. The problem is with activating "alternative" email addresses. I have two domain names for websites that I run and as BT emails are now channelled through Yahoo all email addresses on the domain names need to be activated by Yahoo so that the email address can use the BT SMTP server. If you don't have your own domain names registered then this would not apply to you I'm afraid.

You're quite right, it doesn't.

However, it'll be interesting to see if anyone else is experiencing a similar problem to you.

I suppose it beggars the question; is the problem with BT or Yahoo?

Just to add a bit of detail to this. The problem I am having which has flumaxed BT is that any email address that starts with admin@ etc or administrator@ etc gets rejected by Yahoo as an invalid email address. It's the word "admin" that causes the problem. I am interested to know if anyone else has come across this problem!

Just curious, cant you just forget yahoo and use a different SMTP server?

Have tried that but I cannot get the SMTP that is supplied by my host server to work. It seems Yahoo over rides it! Will contact my server today to see what can be done there!

I'm pretty sure that BT only block port 25 SMTP, so if your host has an alternative SMTP port that you could use then you maybe ok.

Can't you substitute another word for Admin, such as Chief, and make it clear on your sites that Chief is alternate name for Admin?

Good idea thanks but better news. It was my fault the alternative SMTP didn't work, got a setting wrong. All is working now. Have successfully bypassed Yahoo. (Who's a clever boy then?)
