Hi, Im currently running Windows 7 x64 build 7232 with a Intel Quad 2.8Ghz CPU. I was looking at my resource monitor and saw that the first core on my CPU was running at around 50%. Whilst the other cores are running at around normal rate (between 0 to 10%) on the desktop.

I also checked my memory and it seemed to be using around 1.12GB RAM (4GB total). I was just wondering if this is normal, because I haven't got many programs running in the background apart from drivers, and a Anti Virus program.

I've looked on this forum and have tried some of the suggestions such as disabling the high definition audio, and removing the gadgets feature. But the first core still seems to run at 50% on the desktop.

I appreciate any help.

Thanks

Stig

That doesn't sound right, you r right to question it. What webcam u got? I have many apps open and running at this moment and my cores never go above 25% or so.

I dont use any webcams. It's really strange I cant seem to lower that first core . I can play games such as Crysis without any lag. And it seems that the second core is now running at 50%, the others are normal.

This is weird.

Hi

Actually not so strange. alot app's use a single thread in fact are programmed to have a processor affinity. You can actuall use task manager to find out which one it is and even throttle that app if you want. Just goto the process tab and right click. If one of the apps using alot of mem has only core 1 checked thats your culprit. You can also change the priority of the offending app as well. A note of caution abt changing prioriry, and affinity, its not permanent, and your computer might not like it a bunch.

Hope this helps

I've had a quick look in the task manager and couldn't see any processes that was using alot of memory. I also checked the affinities for all the processes, and they all have the processors checked.

I opened the resource monitor and I saw that the Creative Audio Service seems to be using 10% of one of the cores. Its the highest using service of the list.

I seemed to have found the problem, when i disabled the Creative Audio Service, the core dropped to normal rates. Trouble is I need this service in order to use my sound card dont I?

You have a ton more computer than I do but win 7 (and vista) have a lot of services running that dont need to be. One place to read abt it is called Blackviper.
Im not sure if we are allowed to post external links on the site so if you cant find it PM me.

Anyway I went from 67 services by default to 53 and cpu dropped 15 % ram by 20.

Creative needs to be running and if its only using 10% thats not a major hit. I have an app that if not throttled uses 100% of both cores.

Hope this helps

Yea currently my PC is only running 43 processes which aint bad really. Its definiately the creative audio service. It must be the beta driver. I'll just have to wait for an update i guess.

Thanks for the help.

Creative is using two processes, first is called "Ctxfihlp.exe" and "CTxfispi.exe".

The description for the first one just says "Ctxfihlp", but the second process is the SPI (Creative XFI Module).

The Ctxfihlp is the help file, no biggy. My biggest mem/cpu drains are firefox, and sidebar, but hey thats what mem is for.

Just out of curiosity are you using a creative sound card? I didn't think the the P5Q series boards came with anything creative. Well my PRO doesn't any way.

I do know that creative drivers can be a bit crappy, and that they arn't always 100% compatible with new OS's. Vista drivers don't always work perfectly.

Yea its a Creative XFI Titanium sound card. The vista drivers work perfectly for this card, but the drivers for Windows 7 are only a beta, and like you said creative aren't known for good drivers.

Sometimes you may get a runaway java script on a page that can choke up a core. I've had it happen in IE too.
