Building a new rig and need a fair bit of advice :)

Eeep :D

Well then that'll be a major upgrade :D

THe GPU is an nvidia 480 which I'll admit is probably kind of stupidly expensive :D the 470 is like half the price and 3/4 the performance and would be a kick ass upgrade for a more reasonable cost.

The Asus Premium is a very good board full of very nice features. However, it does cost 240. pounds. For 181 pounds, you can get this Asus:Asus P6X58D-E X58 Socket 1366 Gigabit Lan Tripple.. | Ebuyer.com

It's the same chipset. Same 16 phase +2 power. Same usb 3.0 and sata 6.0. Same 3-way sli... in fact, the only thing I can find that distinguishes these two boards is that the Premium has dual gigabit lan and the E has one. Usually the Premium boards boast all the bells and whistles, but Asus seems to have stacked this board too.

Performance, and your overclock, since they're the same chipset, will be identical.

Just something to consider.

The real idea behind X58 motherboards, and what makes them so badass, is SLI and Crossfire support, complete with 2 16x pci-e lanes. Imho, if you're going to get an X58, then you should also be getting 2 graphics cards; if you don't, the platform (and a lot of extra money) is just more or less wasted. If you're only getting a single gpu, then you can get the same performance from an 1156 i7... for a lot less money.

Just another idea to consider. :)

For SLi!!:p (or CrossfireX)
(Even if you did or didn't know already, I'm hyjacking my own post with a brief explanation of CrossfireX and SLi)
Basically if you have a board that supports it, and a big enough power supply, you can add an extra graphics card in to gain much more performance.... and by gain more, it can be up to 90% increases in graphics processing performance in some situations.

Geforce GTX 480s in two way SLi:

Radeon 5770s in two way CrossfireX

This article does cover the basics reasonably well...

In response to what socket type you choose, it is entirely up to you, but I'd be leaning towards the 1366/X-58 platform as it gives better options for a high performance system, and it gives better opportunities for any future upgrades.

Not necessarily, if you set up an SLi or Crossfire system all of the cards will run the one monitor if that's all you have connected, as each of the cards will co-operate to produce the image.

You could do either one or two monitors, coming from the same card or from each card with SLI (nvidia); and with Crossfire (ATI), you can do that too, as well as run an Eyefinity setup, which is 3 monitors off of 1 card's output... of course you would benefit from having them crossfired.
