Built-In Webcam Not Working - "Unknown Device" USB Code 43

Hello,
I have looked over many, many other forums and threads regarding this issue, but to no avail, have not been able to solve my problem. I'm starting to think that some hardware that communicates with my Webcam could be damaged - but I have not given up hope that this could be solved alternatively.

My laptop came preinstalled with Windows Vista Home Edition - I have since upgraded. The webcam was functional with both OS. Also, my BIOS is not updated with the most recent available software (F.15 is available). I had F.15 and downgraded to F.14 to see if that might solve my issue, but it did not.
I have tried a variety of different things (clean boot, various installs of the driver, uninstalled all of the devices listed in Universal Serial Bus controllers and restarted), but again, to no avail.
I'm hoping someone might be able to shed light on my problem! I can provide anymore additional information as needed. In the device manager, where it shows "Unknown Device" (which I believe to be the built-in webcam, as it appeared around the same time the webcam stopped working), which is under the Universal Serial Bus controllers, I copied all of the information in the Properties - Details tab. Since your webcam appears to be USB it can be two possiblities

You need to re-install the driver for it, or more likely follow these generic USB fix-it instructions

I tried all of the suggestions you gave - I first used the driverscanner to identify any out-of-date drivers. It detected that my Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader driver was out-of-date. So I updated that driver - no go. I then reinstalled the driver for the Webcam - but to no avail. The installation of the driver runs through (although, windows does indicate that the "application may have not installed correctly" after it finishes installing, and provides me with two options - 1, to reinstall the application with windows recommended settings, or 2 to ignore windows recommendations - I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not).

Any other suggestions?

Most laptop webcams are listed under Imaging Devices in Device Manager if they are working. Do you have that listing?

Give this a try: Shut down the laptop. Unplug the power supply. Remove the laptop battery. Now press and hold the power button down for 30 seconds or so.
Put everything back in and start up.

A long shot but sometimes it works!

You sure it is the correct driver?

Zigzag: I was given the driver directly from an HP tech assistant, so I'd hope its the right driver, but who knows! I'm not sure else how to tell....

TVeblen: I'll give that a shoot and post back! I'll try anything at this point (other than a reinstall of the OS - something I'd like to avoid, if possible). EDIT: Oh, and no, the webcam is not listed under "Imaging Devices;" it used to be when it worked correctly. But now I think something caused windows to not be able to correctly identify it correctly anymore, which I believe to be the "unknown" device in Universal Serial Bus controllers.

Be sure to remove the unknown device in device manager and then restart the computer, then install the driver package.

HP should have a page for your laptop with drivers for it. Be sure to get the driver from there if possible.

If you know you have the correct driver and it will not install then you have to consider the possibility that the webcam has died.

Ok - thanks! I'll go through your suggestion, but I don't believe HP actually offers the webcam driver on its download driver page for my HP; they only offer the media software, which doesn't install a driver for the webcam (to my knowledge).

I figured the hardware could have crapped out, but I wasn't sure if that was the case since it was still being detected (just not correctly identified).

That was the purpose of my little exercise. What you did was reset the BIOS defaults, which forces the BIOS to re-enumerate (recognize and name) all the devices in the system. Then when it hands off to Windows if there were any recognition issues they would have been cleared up.

SOMEONE PLEASE help with my webcam - I could use it previously and now it is not working - was intermittant for a while and now cant use it - cant see it udner device manager on listing but can see unknwon device - but says not working :Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
