"Burn" CD rejects disk

When I attempt to burn a CD, with any of several programs, and insert a new blank CD-R disk, it is rejected, with the message "Insert a blank disk in the E drive." I tried different blanks from different manufacturers. I don't know if "E" is the CD drive; it is the only on on my HP Touchsmart 600.

I don't understand, Roderunner. Uninstall what? The only thing connected to my PC besides mouse & keyboard is a printer, disconnect that?

zammer,
Give us a clue as to what we are dealing with by filling out your system specs.

Here is how to do that:

UPDATE YOUR SEVENFORUMS SYSTEM SPECS

User CP (3rd item in the top menu bar) |
in left-hand column, under Your Profile, Edit System Spec |

Use Speccy - System Information - Free Download
and/or SIW to gather info for filling in the blanks.

Do me a favor. Please add the word laptop or desktop to the “system manufacturer” block.

Provide full windows version info, such as provided by Speccy:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1

Use the “Other Info” block for Optical Reader, Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor

Scroll down and click on the SAVE CHANGES button.

In "Computer" it says under "Devices": DVD RW DRIVE :E, and REMOVABLE DISC :F.
There is only one disc slot on the HP. I can play CDs in it. The problem arises when I try to burn them.

Good.

Now I know this sounds trivial but... the problem is either hardware or software.

Since this is a desktop, what's the chance that you have an extra cd/dvd unit around or have a friend with an extra? The idea would be to disconnect your present cd/dvd unit, connect the other one, do NOT help win 7 but let win 7 decide the best driver for your cd/dvd.

Now if the trial hardware works fine, you have your answer.

Is this a possibility for you?

Pity.

Here's what I've seen work, but is not a 100% cure for all cases:

Completely uninstall ALL programs you have for reading/writing to the cd/dvd unit. That's all except for anything from Microsoft.

I've found that especially Nero has been problematic and some of the clone dvd programs.

That is not practical, Karlsnooks. I prefer to keep it as a last resort, pending other suggestions. I don't have NERO or other DVD burn programs that I'm aware of. Thank you.

Did you try what Roadrunner suggested, to uninstall the optical drive from Device Manger, then reboot and let Windows 7 rediscover it and reload the driver? That isn't exactly what he said but that's what he meant.

Also, open My Computer. Right click on the optical drive and select properties. Is there a Recording tab and are settings correct?

Properties for "DRD/RW Drive (E)" and "Removable Disk (F)" do not have recording tabs. Under Hardware, E has "CDDVDW TS-T633P SCSI CDRO Type-DVD/CD, and says "This device is working properly. It also has "Multiple Card Reader USB Device Type Disk Drive" and "ST375052 8AS SCSI Disk Device Type Disk Drive" and both of those say they are working properly. F has the same, except for "USB Device Type Disk Drive" instead of "CDDVW..." All of those say they're working properly.
I haven't tried what Roadrunner suggested. I'm not certain I know how. In the properties sections of the two drives are buttons to "Disable" or "Uninstall (Advanced)" the drive. Can I do it with these? If so, I'd really appreciate it if you would give me step-by-step instructions. (Don't think you'll be insulting my intelligence. I'm a very old dog trying to learn new tricks.)
