Burning CD's in Win7

I'm getting ready to upgrade to Win7 Professional. Are there adequate capabilities built in to do basic CD/DVD burning?

Also, I noticed there are several free programs out there available for download. Any of these better than Win7's burner?

In XP I used an old version of Nero and found it to be the easiest, but doubt my old version will be compatible with Win7.

nero has a free version that works with win7:

does that burn audio cds?

it mentions "flawless copies of music files", but the restrictions say "Nero BurnLite 10 contains simply data burning and disc copying."

so it looks like it'll be able to burn mp3s (for example) to cd, but only as mp3 files, not audio playable on a standard cd player. i know a lot of new-ish cd players will play mp3 discs, but not older ones.

i like ashampoo burning studio free - it's pretty old, but does the job.

*edit* always be careful when installing free stuff - they often try to make you install crappy toolbars etc - untick all those boxes if you can.

Windows 7 natively support the ability to burn ISO images, without needing of a third party tool

True, I use CD Burner XP works very well in Windows 7

Windows 7 burns CD's just fine. Put a blank CD in then drag the file you want to burn.

In the past I have had problems with Windows 7 default burning making coasters. I went to CDBurnerXp and it has worked great. I also like the GUI interface. They also have a 64bit version available.

I would go Ashampoo Burning Studio, I bought it and it never screws up, it from germany as well as Nero but Ashampoo is a much smaller program and it installs less registry entries. Where as Nero creates 1000s of registry and .cab files that take up a lot of space on the hard drive.

EDIT: So I agree with Mickey Megabyte, I just burned an mp3 disk of Lacuna Coil Discography and it did it flawlessly whereas Roxio, Nero and other fell flat on their faces!

it's also easy to uninstall, if you need to.

i haven't used nero for a long time, maybe it's improved since then, but i remember it being a royal pain to uninstall, needing a special 'nero remove tool' - just like norton did.
