What mail client are you using? In Outlook 2010 (Beta), which is what I am using, there is an option to automatically delete the contents of the Deleted Items folder when you exit the program. You just need to confirm either Yes or No when you do so.

To delete a message immediately without the Recycle Bin or Deleted Items Folder in Windows Live Mail, Windows Mail, Outlook Express or Outlook:

  • Hold down the Shift key while pressing Del or selecting Delete in the context menu.
  • Click Yes.
Be careful with this shortcut, though, since your message won't be recoverable once deleted this way.

This works in Outlook but not in Windows Live Mail! Even when holding Shift down, it goes to Deleted Mail.

I know this is an old post but just in case anyone is still searching for an answer to this problem:

In Windows Live Mail client, even if you hold down the shift key while clicking delete in the context menu for a message or folder it will still go to the Deleted Items folder. However if you select the item, hold down the shift key and hit the delete key on your keyboard you will be asked if you want to permanently delete the file. Click Yes and it's gone for good. :D
