Different solution for me.
Finally found the problem on my machine. It was a folder named PCtools under C:\Program files\Common files\ . Deleting that folder at a time when my C drive was nearly full once again, from one hour to the next, freed up a whopping 41 Gig. Not sure why that folder was there since I've not had PC tools on my machine for a long time but I discovered in the Resource Monitor that it was very busy in the Disk read/write dept and I wasn't able to explain why it was there or what it was doing.
Amazing how fast my puter suddenly has become again.
