C: space seems be missing

I have a strange problem with my wife's desktop: when I query the size of c:\windows, it tells me there is 17GB's worth of files, but when I go into the folder and query everything, one by one, it only adds up to rather less than 10GB. And I am pretty sure I have displayed invisible as well as system files (only pretty sure: she is Chinese, so everything is in Chinese, and I have to guess at what I am doing, more or less). So, where are the missing files - or is there another explanation?

The reason I found out at all was that the C: partition is full - it is only 25GB. I have tried to expand it, but first I have to move everything on the D: partition to E:, and there is a process that keeps files open - and how do you find which program that is? Sigh.

Welcome to Seven Forums . You'll get different suggestion for programs to tell you what is using space on your system, but I like SpaceSniffer. It will tell you how much space is used, and what is using it.

Rather then figure out which files are open, you might be able to do it in safe mode

in win7 x64, there are a variety of system modules to ensure you can run x64 ands x86 (32bit) software. there is a folder called winsxs (stands for windows side by side) that contains a number of 'hard links' to existing files. these are not copies, just links, and they do not actually take up space. the system treats them like real files tho & thus they get counted as part of the file space, thus the total is really incorrect. when this total hits the size of the hard disk, it will actually still have free space that is useable and the new totals may go over 100%.

do not try to delete ANY files in the winsxs folder as it will likely screw up you whole file system & render parts inoperable.

...and a third party partitioning utility run from a boot cd will allow easier partition resizing as no files on the hard disk(s) will be in use.

My firewall blocked that site as being a botnet host. Just sayin. Also you could try TreeSize Free - Quickly Scan Directory Sizes and Find Space Hogs (treesize) will do the same thing, map out where alot of your storage is going.

It's normal about the space. kronckew has given the right explanation.

You can expand it with "Acronis Disk Director" without moving and losing any data.

It's worth mentioning that Windows Disk Cleanup now includes Windows updates. Running this can help a little.
