Cable & wireless problems, slow/no internet

Hi all, I'm new here, I was hoping you could help me.

I'm having problems with my internetconnection on my Windows 7 laptop.
I've bought it new 1 week ago, and I've tried both a wireless and a wired connection. The wireless connection works but is EXTREMELY slow. The cable doesn't work at all, windows just says "unidentified network" and "no internet access", even though it has worked for years on my XP-desktop and Vista-laptop.

I've tried almost everything on this forum and the internet for both problems, unplugging the cable, resetting the IPs, fiddling with options, disabling and enabling IPv6, updating drivers even though they were the most recent version.
The wireless problem may be because it's on a really busy channel, but I haven't tested that yet. First I want my wired connection up and running, because it should be more reliable.

My LAN network card is an atheros ar8152, my wireless a realtek RTL8191SE.
I run Windows Home Premium 64bit. Checked for spy/adware, nothing

Can you give us some info about your WAN setup. what is your ISP? whats your rated download speed?, etc.

I'm in a city area in the Netherlands, internet connections are very well established here. My ISP is Versatel B.V., and my rated download speed is 12 Mbps, it does around 1.18 Mbps according to Speedtest.net. Upload is at 0.57 Mbps. We have a modem with wireless connections, and a router. I don't know the password to the router/modem, but I've tried unplugging them and plugging them back in.

I hope someone has the answer for me, my internet is still slow, and my cable still isn't recognised. I'm stumped and annoyed.

typically this is displayed because you aren't getting a DHCP address.. are you getting a 192.168.*.* address, or are you getting a 169.254.*.* address?

We have a modem with wireless connections, and a router

this is a strange sounding setup. i would have to guess that if your modem can be directly connected to with wireless, your modem is also a router. then you say that there's a router behind your modem? that seems to indicate trouble.

since you said your wireless works (to some degree) and that your wired doesnt work at all, that makes sense (if your laptop is plugged directly into the router over the ethernet cable). i would imagine there's some network misconfiguration at play..

first, remove that secondary router (the one without wireless) from your modem. then power cycle your modem. then try plugging your laptop directly into your modem via an ethernet cable. are you able to connect to the internet? what are the speeds like?

Thanks for replying! I get a 192.168.x.xx adress with my wireless. I really begin to think there are to many networks in the neighbourhood, so I get interference, and that's why it's slow.

I tried plugging my laptop directly in the primary router/modem, it stills says unidentified network, no internet access. It can see there's a cable plugged in, it just doesn't want to connect to internet. I tried a static IP, a dynamic IP adress, both didn't work.
Remember, this network setup worked for years and continues to work on every other computer or laptop on our network, just not on this Windows 7 laptop. It's unable to use any DSL cable.

This is usually caused by a compatiblity problem between your Win 7 machine and the network hardware or driver. The unidentified network problem is usually caused by a rogue default gateway. Try the link below which shows you how to type in your default gateway manually. You will need to know the correct default gateway of your router for this.

As for the wireless channel cross over problem, try using Xirrus which shows you which channels are being used in your area so you can find a clean channel.

hmm... so when you plugged directly into the modem, you still had problems. do you know if your modem itself gets your ISP's address? im thinking it should since i believe it to be a router. if that's the case, when you connect the win7 laptop directly to the modem, you should be getting a private IP. if so;

1- can you ping your modem's private IP?
2- if you can, can you ping your MODEM'S gateway?
3- if so, can you ping your MODEM'S DNS servers?
