Call Centre woes :(

Sometimes in the USA, it takes a bit of patience to communicate with someone else here, especially if they are a new immigrant or tourist, but we seem to be able to deal with it for the most part. That makes it more difficult to understand how the UK can have so many dialects hampering communication among groups that are so close together in proximity and origin, even though I realize that historically they have quite different roots, because one would think that over the centuries that the languages would meld together. On the other hand, when I listen to some here that have kept themselves isolated culturally from the rest of the people, or as slang sprouts and changes in younger people, it's not really all that difficult to understand.

We actually have a pretty simple (informal) training method here.

When a new rep starts out, we tape her/him making a couple of calls. Then we make them go through a bunch of videos and get them to type out what's being said. They also get to hear firsthand how good diction helps. In my experience southeast asians don't have major accent issues; it's usually the grammar gotchas.
