Solved Can a S.M.A.R.T. 301 error be fixed with software?

Hello all,

today my laptop 1 years old hp when i booted up it showed me a S.M.A.R.T. 301 error. i clicked enter and then booted to windows and a message appeared telling me to backup all my files due to the error.However i have run S.M.A.R.T. tests and i dont see any problem cause they can finish but every HDD monitoring software i try says there is an error cycle or sector read error 1 something like that.I have disabled he windows message to backup m files from apearing can i fix the problem withour replacing HDD or at least hide the bootup message from appearing cause BIOS dosnt have any option for it.My laptop hasnt fallen down at all so it is wierd in less than 1 year 9 months for this error to appear.

A drive can fail at anytime, 2 days or after 10 years. Try this, option 8. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html#post2010
Then see if the message goes away and recheck with your HDD tests.

Also check to see if there's a BIOS update for your laptop.

While a BIOS update COULD fix this, given that it appears to be a hard drive problem, I personally find that VERY unlikely -- and I would personally advise against doing a BIOS update just to see what happens.

Do NOT do a BIOS update unless the following is true:
1) You have a way to save off the current, working, BIOS
2) You have a way to restore that working BIOS in case the upgrade goes bad

Furthermore, although a laptop drive starting to fail after only one year's use is unusual, it's also not impossible. IF you can pull out the drive and run the manufacturer's diagnostic utility against it, that will let you know the health of the drive.

There seemed to be an unusual amount of HP Laptop problems associated with disk drives. The same problem is being reported on numerous help sites including HP. A BIOS update issued by HP seems to cure the problem. This was the reason I suggested the OP check for an update. But hey, what do I know?

This is the US site. I don't know if HP has a European support site or not. In any case, it should have been one of your Favorites and checked on a regular basis for a new PC.
