i tried that with laptop and it needed the prduct key even though it was printed on the button of the comptuer it did not work and i had to buy winodws 7 to put on it to use it and for my desktop i do not know the product key and it to old to put windows 7 on

You need to use the OEM manufacturer's Win XP CD, not a Retail Win XP CD.

You'd get it from the OEM. They may be able to sell you a recovery disk with Windows XP on it.

the only thing I can think of is trying with a Linux live-cd, like a ubuntu disk, and choose "try ubuntu" in the wizard when booting your old computer with it.

Then you open up the terminal and write this

dd if=/path_to_floppy_image.ima of=/dev/floppy

path_to_floppy_image is the path to the place you stored the floppy image.

if it is on a USB drive it could look like "sdb1/floppyimage.ima"
navigate to it from inside ubuntu and then copy the path to it.
