Hi

I have a dualboot WIN7/Vista Home Premium PC at home. NEVER use Vista anymore.

Can I buy an Upgrade WIN7 and do an inplace upgrade of my WIN7 system, or do I have do buy a new copy (full) and do a clean install over a freshly reformatted partition?

Many thanks and also thanks for these forums in general. The wonders of the internet....!

If you mean upgrading from RC to RTM (final) with an upgrade copy of RTM, then I believe that would be a no. Plus, upgrades can cause many problems ESPECIALLY from RC to Final. :|

I recommend only doing clean installs, you could upgrade from Vista though since its a legit OS and is activated I'd assume.

Actually, Microsoft has indicated the activated Release Candidate WILL be recognized as a legitimate prior version of Windows as far as the upgrade discs go.

However, they've also indicated that only Vista will be upgradeable in the sense of being able to carry over files and settings. The RC will be handled like XP in that the discs will force a fresh install. (There's even a file you could painlessly modify to have it actually upgrade from the RC, but it's not recommended.)

Anyway, yes, you can use the upgrade discs coming from either the activated RC or an activated copy of Vista. Just be aware they'll force a fresh install if coming from the RC.

Also keep in mind that should you need to reinstall to a blank drive in the future, there will be a point at which the RC no longer gets activated, so you'd have to install and activate something like Vista for the upgrade discs to go in. If you just reinstall to the same drive over an activated copy of Windows 7 once it's in, there theoretically shouldn't be an issue.
