I tend to read with my cursor so pop ups such as highlighted words (for instance Google) pop up.

I have Tools > Popup Blocker turned on to high but I still get popups. Is there any way to prevent this and other forum's popups?

Thanks,

Kerry

Im a bit confused. You want a popup when you highlight a word, but have popup blocking set to high because you dont want popups?

I never see a notification that IE blocked a popup and never have seen a popup on this site. Is the highlighted words a feature of sorts provided by a toolbar?

If I understand, you are getting unwanted popups. So far, I haven't had that problem in this forum, but in those that I have, I use a browser (Opera) in which I can disable Javascript, and that prevents the popups. However, that is usually denoted by certain words having a dotted underline, and I haven't seen those here.

There are NO pop ups on this site. What exactly do you mean?

I thinks perhaps it's a matter of terminology...I also "read with my cursor" and while going down through the threads in a group you get small informational boxes which some call hints, tool tips, previews, etc... I don't believe the original poster is actually talking about actual pop ups since I have never seen a single one anywhere in these forums.

In addition to the ad-blocking properties of your browser, and the ability of the browser to disable Javascript, there is one more option. Each browser has third-party popup blocking tools available as free downloads. My personal preference is Firefox 3.0.11 (don't really care for 3.5), with AdBlockPlus on top of it.

Right out of the box it will know about hundreds of ads. Each graphic on every site you visit can right-click>Block to add to that list. Surf your common sites and block the ads, after about 10 minutes of setup I simply don't see ads much anymore.

I think the kind of popup the OP was referring to are those 'helpful' links you see in some sites' texts. What I do is view the page source, find where that link was trying to take me, and add that to ABP. Then refresh the page - links are gone.

Hope that made at least a little sense!

Hi patwhatsthat,

Exactly! Sorry about the confusion from my incorrect terminology.

Re: Hints, tool tips, previews, etc. that pop up—can prevent?

Thanks,

Kerry
