Where can I change MTU to say something like 1452 - I am running PPPoE and the router is dropping packets. I get 500Mbits when connected directly to modem and 50Mbits when connected through router.

Thanks in advance

Welcome to Seven Forums, anatol.

You can change the MTU in the router. Depending on the type, the place to change it will be called different things, but look for "Setup" or "Basic setup" when you log onto the router.

Try setting it equal to the MTU value in the modem.

(The receive buffer value in the network interface card (NIC) will be set to a lot less - probably 256 - don't worry about that.)

Since you don't have the problem when directly connecting to the modem, but do when you connect through the router, that tells me that the router is somehow involved.

While it is true that the originating system has a role in the size, once it hits the Internet, the "originator" to you is the last switch in the line - your ISP.

All that said, it is possible that the connection between your system and the router is causing problems. Is the connection wireless to the router? If it is, check for interferrence near the router - lights, monitor, etc.

The answer to my question is:
Run netsh as Administrator

netsh>interface ipv4
netsh interface ipv4>show interface

Idx Met MTU State Name
--- ---------- ---------- ------------ ---------------------------
1 50 4294967295 connected Loopback Pseudo-Interface 1
11 10 1500 connected Local Area Connection

netsh interface ipv4>set interface "Local Area Connection" mtu=1452
Ok.
netsh interface ipv4>show interface

Idx Met MTU State Name
--- ---------- ---------- ------------ ---------------------------
1 50 4294967295 connected Loopback Pseudo-Interface 1
11 10 1452 connected Local Area Connection

netsh interface ipv4>bye

Did it solve my problem - that is a different question :)

Wow! Autotunes - really? So, I don't need to set the MTU to 1492 like I did in XP? That's great! One less tweak I have to do. Way to go MS.

Windows 7 is by default using Ethernet II which has an MTU of 1500 versus Ethernet (I or 802.3) which has an MTU of 1492. Most modern networks are using Ethernet II frames...if yours is not...well...

For all of it's whistles and bells, Windows 7 support for ethernet devices lags far, far, short of that of Windows XP - and it's by no means clear whether all the intended improvements actually add real functionality...

How so?

Just look at all the posts on network adapter woes here.

Wireless and ethernet, driver issues, dropout issues, reliability and speed issues, there are a whole plethora of problems spread wide and far across the forum.

Point me to an XP forum which lists anything like as many issues ;)

Past or Present? Windows XP has had about 10 years to get mature drivers. However it is also still using older technology. Compared to what is being used in more modern networks.

I'm talking about the present of course, but am referring to it specifically in the light of what Microsoft admit in retrospect was a drivers debacle when Vista was launched - with the emphasis being squarely upon this situation they themselves judged poor being repeated with Windows7 RTM products... ;)

This site here tells you how to change MTU settings in win 7
Change your MTU under Vista or Windows 7 richard-slater.co.uk

Awesome reply/post. Shows the others that 'think' they know what they are talking about are wrong. Not that I am always right, but I do my best to state something along the lines that my reply may not be 100% accurate.

Windows, no matter what version, will never have my faith in operation when it comes to networking and any 'so-called' automatically setting garbage that Windows is supposed to do is hogwash. Why? Because in order for your computer to work properly, you need to set things manually (in special cases). MS has a lot of work to do in order to get things right when it comes to networking. It would be much better if they would just FOLLOW standards instead of trying to make standards that just DON'T work... As far as MTU settings in a router, well, maybe that MIGHT help, but what if you don't have a router? Then, yes, you need to set it within your operating system.

Scenario... I use an LG Revolution with Tethering (Yes, before you say anything, I DO pay for the hotspot service, so it is 100% legit!!!). I have had LOTS of problems connecting to websites. With Ubuntu Linux, and it's EASY network setting ability, I was able to determine setting MTU=1300 as a prefect setting. All websites now loaded at full speed without any hanging around for days waiting for a web page to show up that never would. Not until I was able to set MTU=1300.

@Qdos - I Agree.

@TorrentG - Yeah, right. See my Scenario

Don't get me wrong, people, Between the mess with Windows Millenium and Windows Vista, I feel that Windows XP and Win7 are, by far, the best OS Versions MS has released. (I kind of like the way that Windows 7 copied the 'update' process of Ubuntu Linux, supplying hardware drivers via Update, rather than having to search for them, especially some hard-to-find drivers). The problem with Windows these days, is that it's base is outdated. It's time for MS to rebuild a NEW OS from the ground up. I'm not a hater of MS overall, just their practices and failure to come out with a truly improved OS. Adding fancy graphics and such is not worth the efforts (looked what happened with Vista, even the CEO didn't want Vista put on his workstation, at least that's what the assumed leaked email that went around stated). The registry needs to go away and many other changes. I believe they have the ability to do so, but I think they are afraid of losing users through a major change. That's understandable since it would be likely that previous software would no longer work, but Windows has been basically the same since Windows 95.

I felt the need to post this because I don't like ignorance and wanted to reinforce my gratitude to those who don't stop at "you can't do it", when there are always ways to do it and it was accomplished. In fact, I used the "you CAN do it" reply and was able to get my Windows 7 OS internet functionality back to 100%. :)

Sorry, if I offended anyone, just like to speak my mind and many thanks to those who give correct answers! :-)

-Cybie

EDIT: I realize this is an OLD post, but still relevant and the first post that came up in a Google search for my needs. :)
