Can i change my laptop's processor?

Hello
i have an ASUS K42JP with Intel Core i5 560M, which is 1st generation, dual-core
can i replace it with a Core i7 3612QM one, which is a Quad-core 3rd generation processor?

I think you'll find compatibility issues with the motherboard. You'll probably want to determine the mobo make and model and then research whether or not it can handle that Quad-core 3rd generation processor. Another consideration is how much disassembly will be required to access the old processor. This manual may give you an idea of what's in store:

marsmimar is correct, you have a G1 socket, the i7 has a G2 socket.

This site tells you the socket (CPU-motherboard interface), all processors that fit in that socket are here, but as they say you need to check if the processor is compatible with your laptop. Since laptops weren't meant to be upgraded, this info is hard to come by. A rule of thumb would be to look for what processors they used in more expensive versions of the same laptop model you have. Not guaranteed to work, but better than wild guessing.

Another important thing is checking TDP, which is thermal output of the processor. Your current processor TDP is 35 watt, so the heat rejection system of the laptop is unlikely to handle more than that. There are quite a few i7 from the list above that are in that range though, so it's not that bad.

It is also important to find out if the laptop is using a socket or is surface mounted (physically attached via solider).

cpu's in laptops are designed to give you a headache to dissasemble, and in the end it might be unreachable and even physical soldered making it IMPOSSIBLE to modify or upgrade. 90% of the time laptops are made to stop people upgarde, so you bave what you buy nothing else, (hdd's always come out and mostly ram does too but sometimes not)

bayarfaj2004 the truth is you laptop is kind of like a Bic pen, lighter, razor. 99% of the time they are to be use as they were designed. If you decide you want more you buy another one to suite your desires and needs. You don't in most cases upgrade or repair them. If you could find a cpu, motherboard, and necessary improvements in cooling its cost would be huge.
