Can I customize characters map ?

Hello,
I am trying to customize special characters map and make a list of favorites to use (just like mac characters viewer). Is this possible ? it is a pain to keep scrolling through the characters when I have to use them constantly in different applications (word, excel, indesign, etc. Any help is appreciated.

Thank you stalker, this is very helpful. However, I still do not know how to group all my favorite special characters (30+) under one category so that i only see them and not all the other special characters. thanks

I think windows character map is not able to make custom group.
but you may find helpful this character map to remember codes and use them with combination of ALT key to print them instantly:
