Not sure if this question has been asked before or not. My computer was/is infected with some rubbish search engine - Claro. I have followed all of the possible solutions I have been able to find on the internet but to no avail.
Have deleted files, registry keys etc., but still it pops up on opening Firefox. It does not, however, show when using IE [which I do not use generally but did so as a test]. The only place I have found any reference to this abysmal virus is in the clr.lst file and I am not sure if it is permissible or wise to delete the file or even to edit it since I am not sure of it's purpose. Searching for what/why of clr.lst is as futile as looking for an honest pollie.:(

Firstly, an apology. The file in question was named clrList............my eyes [and spectacles] are not as good as they used to be and I misread it. However I did modify it by deleting all references to isearch which I understood was one of the items of Claro. The thing is still loading when I open Firefox. I have, as stated, followed every suggestion I was able to find on the internet including, naturally the first check, Firefox addons. There is no reference to this thing anywhere that I can find on my machine so I am getting real antsy. If I lived in Israel, where this bunch of misfits appears to be registered, I would probably be considering a visit to Montera with an IED. Perhaps the arabs have been having problems with Claro - would explain a lot.

Follow the below steps to remove Claro

1. On the firefox address bar type "about:config"

2. Accept the warning and move forward

3. Search for "Keyword.url"

4. You should probably have claro in the value

5. Change it to "http://google.com/ncr"

6. Also go to Tool > Options under "General" change the Homepage to "Restore to Defaults"

7. Install Malwarebytes and run it

6. Remove you current Antivirus and run MSE ( Microsoft Security Essential)

Let me know how it goes .

Well, thanks for your suggestions but as I thought I made clear in my posts I have done everything that has been suggested in forums etc., including all of the above. There is no reference to this evil machination anywhere on my machine but it still comes up when I open Firefox. About:config "keyword.url" is blank and no matter to what I change it, next time Firefox opens it is blank again. Each time I change the Homepage to "Restore to Defaults" or even put my own homepage in, or whatever, each time I open Firefox Claro search is back again. I even checked the files in the Firefox directory, ran Malwares, Spybot and MSE but to no avail. Maybe the next trick would be to uninstall Firefox and re-install or perhaps take up gardening.

Actually I backed up my files with Mozbackup and uninstalled without deleting my personal settings before the second of the posts was seen. I still got Claro. I uninstalled again and deleted my personal settings and after a re-install still got Claro. Now I see that I should use an uninstaller other than Windows Control Panel..............Oh well, here goes but I may not respond further 'til tomorrow........zzzzzzzzzzzzzz!:D

heres... what you do...

install firefox first..... and then use the uninstaller like iobit or revo to remove all the files related to firefox, registry entries...etc...

if that doesn't still solve your problem... let me know... i will try via teamviewer to help you out...

Well, thanks for that. Unfortuately I uninstalled with Obit and deleted keys entries etc.,. However when I returned to my machine there were still folders in the Mozilla Firefox folder. I deleted all of them, re-indtalled Firefox and it opened automatically with no Claro search page. After I closed it and re-opened it.........yes, our old friend was back.
I have noticed that if I open Firefox by clicking on a link such as I get from the forum there is no Claro. If I open it from my desktop it is there......I do not get it with the MS junk IE. So, back to the drawing board.

Try firefox safe mode and select everything and reset to defaults
Thanks again. Tried this checked all boxes and restarted in safe mode........got Claro search again! I am beginning to suspect that this problem is not actually within Firefox and must be hidden somewhere in my machine. As I said although I don't use IE there is no problem when I try browsing with IE. Problem is just where this thing could be lurking since, as I said, there is no indication of it anywhere and no searches find it.

Well that does it

you would need to got to about:config and remove all reference to claro..... plus a reference to a program called browser manger....

Removing these solved the problem....

With apologies

After your great performance in solving what appeared to me to be an insurmountable problem I did indicate that I would thank you personally in this forum the next day. Unfortunately since then I have been unwell with either a liver problem or pancreatitis so have been unable to do much. Hopefully the diagnosis will be more positive after an Ultrasound examination on Monday.:(
In the meantime I must tell all interested parties that in spite of the brevity of centaur78's posting I don't think it was that simple. He did put a lot of work into it and this in spite of my being able to access my computer at the same time! Sorry about that centaur78:o
Again I thank you for your wonderful efforts and for placing me in a less stressful state of mind.:)
I will be eternally grateful.
