You lost me - if you buy a new product key why not buy an installation disk. That has a lot of advantages down the road. But in principle you can install from any installation disk provided the new key is for the same edition.

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) installation disks are designed for a single machine. It checks for various signatures like parts ID numbers. If it doesn't see the right information, it won't work.

So the answer, is "no", it won't work.

IMHO, WHS is "right on" regarding the second point.

Hmm, that is interesting regarding OEM disks. Did not know that. Thanks for correcting my mistake. I usually deal with purchased OEM installation disks - and they, of course, work.

School students count for the deal, as well as college students

Purchased oem (system builder ) discs are identical to the full retail dvd. Only the license key is different.

Oem disc that come with - or be run off from - an oem pre install - may be different in terms of being able to install/activate.

Depends on the oem.

I didn't have any trouble using a Dell supplied oem dvd on a non Dell pc - had to input a new product key is all.

Im a bit confused now.
I think we may be getting the term OEM mixed up.

If Im not mistaken, We have 2 types of OEM.

OEM type discs that are purchased retail are 1 PC only, 1 install only.

OEM (as in disc from Dell, Compaq etc) I believe is what rap33042 was refering to.
These tend to only work or install on that particular machine it was meant for.

Or at least how I understood it.

--EDIT-- SIW2 beat me to the post, and cleared up my confusion :)

I would not buy any software disk from an Ebay "retailer".
We get people all the time with "why can't I activate my windows that I bought off Ebay ".

If you can't get a student version and have to buy it yourself buy it from a reputable retailer- online or local store.

My two cents.

Thanks for your help but im still slightly confused would this work on a custom built desktop with no OS?

Hard to say - the Dell oem dvd that worked previously was a year or two ago - a Vista dvd.

They might have changed since then .

Also , not sure about this:

The Product Key has been removed from a decommissioned PC.

You will be better off with a full version. Many OEM disks are limited versions and will not run properly except on the machine they were supplied with.

If you want to know if Windows 7 will run on your machine, then download this;

We have 2 types of OEM.
Actually it looks like we have 3 types of OEM

1. Those that you buy - e.g. from Newegg
2. Those that you can get from your PC manufacturer for a S&H charge when you have mucked up your system
3. Those that you burn from the recovery partition

From what I read, the stated restriction applies only to #3 - right?

Well i would use that checker but the machine components have not been bought assembled and will have no OS its being built from scratch but i know the parts will be supported by W7

---EDIT-- also as said above with option 3 can you not simply purchase a new Product Key and use the DVD/CD Rom burnt from the recovery partition to install?

No, but you are supposed to have a qualifying version already to get the upgrade price.

From what I read, the stated restriction applies only to #3 - right?

Some OEM disks will ONLY run on the machine they were supplied with. If you try to boot them on another machine, you will get a blue screen. I have a couple of DELL OEM disks, among others, which cause an immediate blue screen when booted on another machine. Medion also does this, along with crippling the BIOS on the boards they use.

Some are also extremely restricted, with parts of the operating system missing. I have several XP-Professional DELL licences, where half the system utilities are missing. These are original DELL Disks with a full licence key, Microsoft logo etc etc. They will only work on the original DELL machines, ( they check various ID's on the machine), and even then are crippled.

If you buy a System Builder Disk, it should be a full version.

If you burn a disk from a recovery partition, this may also be restricted to the machine it was installed on, and the OS is also often crippled.

Regards....Mike Connor
