I got a nasty virus from a piece of hardware/software I purchased in Afghanistan. I'd like to reformat and start over but I have a question on Windows updates. My internet is barely dial up speed and it will take several days to download all of the updates. Is there a way to export them to a hard drive so I'm not off the air for an extended period?

Do yourself a favor download combo fix and mbam, you will be able to find instructions on how to use them if you google, if you still have issues run a system restore once they have removed the virus. Hope this helps.

I have McAfee Total Protection and it's not finding anything. I'll take a look at the ones you've suggested.

Hello Afkbrad, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You could download the MSU standalone installation file for each Windows Update, and back them up to use to install the Windows Updates without having to download them again.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Almost all of the updates for Windows 7 are included in the full, standalone package of Service Pack 1 - Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB976932)

For a small fee Microsoft will mail you a Windows SP1 installation DVD: Get Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on DVD

Microsoft recommends that 2 updates which specifically address issues associated with SP1 may be installed prior to installing SP1 obtained from Windows Update -
You do not have the option of downloading Windows 7 SP1 when you use Windows Update to check for updates

The updates in question are listed under Method 2: Check for pending updates on the above KB article.
KB976902 is included in the SP1 DVD and the full, standalone SP1 package that can be downloaded from the MS Download Center. If you are going to order SP1 on DVD, then skip KB976902.

Strongly suggest that these updates be installed as may means that they must installed to prevent issues installing future Service Packs -

KB2534366 Windows 7 Sp1 installation fails on a machine with all Language packs installed Error 0xC0000009A
KB2533552 An update that prevents a "0xC0000034" error message when you try to install Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 is available

Then follow Shawn's tip about downloading and saving the updates that will be offered to the system after you've installed SP1.

Doing the above will save you much more time as opposed to doing it over a slow internet connection.
