Can I get UAC to remember user preferences?

Hi. Is there any way to stop UAC asking the same question ("do you want this software to make changes to your PC", or whatever the text is) over and over again for programmes I run many times a day. Surely there must be a way to tell UAC that a certain programme is safe and that I don't want to be asked this every time I run it?

Or maybe not?? Tempted just to shut UAC off altogether..

Hello Martin,

You can't add a program to a UAC white list, but you can use the tutorial below to create a elevated shortcut for the program that will not give you a UAC prompt instead as a workaround.

Thanks Shawn. Only went over to Win7 from XP this week so although much is familiar, some stuff has me scratching my head: a bit frustrating for someone who feels he got to know XP inside-out! But so far I love Win7 (and this forum - immediately bookmarked), so it'll all be worth the effort (at least, I hope so!).

Yeah, getting use to UAC coming from XP takes a bit to get use to, but it really is a good last line of defense security measure. If you like you can read more in-depth details about UAC at the links posted in the info box at the top of the tutorial below.

What's the difference between the tutorial http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/11949-elevated-program-shortcut-without-uac-prompt-create.html and right clicking the program icon in the start menu > properties > compatibility tab > checking the box to run this program as administrator?

Hello Lee,

The tutorial creates a shortcut using Task Scheduler to be able to run the program elevated without getting a UAC prompt, while you will still get a UAC prompt using Compatibility Mode. It's basically a workaround to bypass UAC and still have it run elevated in an administrator account.

Just installed a little utility called TweakUAC, which keeps functionality whilst dispensing with the repeated notifications. Seems to be working fine on Windows 7. (it's not quite the same as altering the notifications in UAC itself, despite what the website says).

Ah, that would be the same as below. It's actually only elevating the account to have the same privileges as the built-in Administrator account.
