u can change ur mini pci-express card in ur laptop for wifi, but its pointless your not going to get much more gain. and they wont be cheap and not that easy to find, depends on the model of the laptop assuming they are made to start with.

I had same dilemna, my brand new HP DV7T-5000 comes with Intel Wifi Link 1000 BGN (2.4GHz) half mini PCI card and I switched to the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 wifi HAL (YYS1-2852359) (dual band N with 2 antennas). Much to my chagrin, HP checks during the BIOS scan and kicked it out as an invalid wlan module id (0702). I replaced the 1000 BGN but am still looking, maybe I'll try the Intel WiFi Link 5100 (dual band n) 512AN-HMMG2. Can't find which modules are valid on the HP Web site. Wish you luck!
PS: you could go with the Netgear WNDA3100 RangeMax Wireless N USB 2.0 Adapter.
