I bought an old HP-Compaq dc5800 microtower from a friend to replace my even older pc. My question is, the machine at the moment has 2 X 1GB DDR2 PC2-640 and I would like to additionally install the 2 X 1GB DDR PC2700 from the old pc, can I do this or would it fry my "new" machine?
N.B. I got the above info running Crucial software and the mobo is: Hewlett-Packard 2820h.
Any advise will be very gratefully accepted :)
Please don't laugh at the old machine I have, I just don't need a new one! I only use it for surfing and email and occasional downloading but I would like to use my old machine's parts instead of just junking it! And yes I will be using the old hard drive as a backup.
I am also running Windows 7 Home Premium x64.

1. Mixing Dimms is not such a good idea. The slowest Dimm will determine the performance. Plus you cannot mix DDR2 and DDR3.

2. For what you are doing, 2GB should be enough. No need to add RAM.

Thanks guys for the quick reply. I will leave it as it is. I thought I could use the spares. Anybody want to buy some old memory chips? :)
