Can I re-install a Windows SSD image onto an HDD?

My Windows 7 ultimate SP1 64bit OS is located on my SSD which fails to update to Windows 10, I would like to try the update on an HDD to see if that works.
I have tried all various suggestions to get the update installed on the SSD.
Is it possible to re-install a Windows 7 SSD image on an HDD within the same computer? with the hope that it will update to Windows 10 so that I can register the installation on this computer and eventually do a clean install of Windows 10.
My Windows 7 is an genuine retail version on DVDs

Why would you think an image of your current install would upgrade to 10 on a hard drive ?

There must be an update missing or something wrong with the ssd install, I had no issues with 2 upgrades from 7 on ssd`s.

When exactly does the upgrade fail ? What are the errror messages ?

I have run SFC, ChkDsk, Disk cleanup and started from a clean Boot all to no avail. Windows Update is on automatic and I cannot see any failures. I did follow the suggestions that were proposed for the failure mode I encountered without success. As for the health of the SSD, SMART reports that it is healthy, and Windows memory diagnostics reports healthy memory.

As can be see on various threads, a number of people have experienced problems when trying the Windows 10 update on SSDs.

I was hoping that by installing an image of the existing OS on an HDD I could possibly pin the problem down to the OS or the hardware, this would leave me with a working OS on the SSD until the cause of the problem became clearer.
