Can I repair xp home with xp professional disc?

I know this is win7 forums, but please help me anyway.

My xp computer wont boot, and I only have a windows professional disc, but the pc is home premium. I don't care about the OS, as I was planning to clean install xp today anyway. But if I restore home premium with professional, even if it messes the os up can I get my files?

I was thinking of simply clean installing but it wants to reformat my drive first. I would install my win7 but it's so old, the advisor said it couldn't handle aero so I'll stick with XP there.

I have a backup cp but its years old so no point in using that.

for 'startup repair' issues i don't see why any xp disc shouldn't work, you should only need to use command-line utilities like fixboot or fixmbr.
