Yes you can run it. Can you play all the latest games? Maybe, maybe not.

Backup is never a bad idea.

All of my systems still run fastest on XP 32-bit for the most part. Win7 is fun to play with, but I still prefer XP for raw speed, security, and functionality.

Please answer these queries....

1. Yes
2. It depends if there is a 64bit version
3. Too many variables to answer definitively

Your post suggests you have 4GB of RAM, your Sys Specs claim 2GB. And that's on the low side if you want to run x64. Add more RAM or go with x86.

The benefit is that you can use all 4GB of RAM.

Backup is not mandatory. Only a smart idea.

what about gaming performance? and can i run 32 bit applications in compatibility mode or something like that? and most importantly will i see considerable change in performance ?

It depends on the game. Some perform better in 64-bit, some worse.

CapZero, I am considering putting x64 on a 2GB system (core 2 duo @ only 1.6Ghz). It seems from your post that you would advise against that.

If I have both x64 and x86 on hand, which should I go with? Would x64 actually run slower on the mediocre system than x86?

You can run both the 32bit and 64bit 7 with only 2gb of memory. In comparison the 64bit Windows simply sees less data swapped out to the dirve and placed into the active ram instead explaining why the usage goes up about 200mb+ in the taskmanager.

That's the 64bit processing data more efficiently there. The 32bit 7 will still see the 400mb+ drop off with that being mapped out to hardwares with a good amount of free ram left over depending on what you run.

With the 64bit RC still on I've been running different new titles as well as some oldies as far as games without problems on a mid range card. For running games at the higher resolutions then you would need to get into a high end video card for that.

Backing things up? I have two separate hard drives for storage and backups with the other three available for whatever OS combination I decide on usually seeing a fresh primary each time a clean install of 7 or ? goes on.
