It fell with a mighty smack ( and me ) on a tiled floor, the screen broke.

It still started. Was in an other land and location then, so when I got home I waited for this HP to arrive, made sure it worked ( was send from Holland by post ). It did. Then I connected my Toshiba external hard drive on it, which had a back up on it from my Dell dated about mai 2015.

That worked well, but was very confusing result, with all the old stuff of former users still on this HP.

Then I read about using monitor and succeeded to join DELL to Monitor. Some things worked after about 30 min, connected it to HP but then the DELL closed up.

Now I am ( as I mention in an other thread here " struggling with etc" on seven forums ) dealing with a sort of confusing PC.

I like to get the data since last mai 2015 off the DELL as my photo's are very important.

Thanks for asking Brian, all help is great in this difficult situation I am dealing with.
I know I am running a bit around like a headless chicken in my confusing trying to sort things out.

Why is there other user data on the HP ????

All you really need to transfer the data from the Dell hard drive is this, as long as the Dell drive uses a sata power and data connection.

But for the price, you can`t beat something like this.

These Dutch friend ( quite well off) learned about my problems and send me an old, not in use laptop up as a gift.

There were all the old data and bits on it ( obviously used by 2 of there kids ) and no Windows or HP CD's.
I asked if they could have a look for those, but up till now no reply. Massive country house, bits everywhere.

Well, you know, cannot be difficult about a present. In Holland we say " you cannot look a given horse in the mouth "

OK, so let`s reinstall windows 7 Professional 64 Bit on it, if it has a readable key on the COA, is it readable ?
It`s on the bottom of the laptop or under the battery.

I wouldn't
For one reason it uses 2 usb ports
second is any hdd/ ssd you connect to it is out in the open

The enclosure I posted uses a normal wall outlet for power and only 1 usb port for transferring the data.
Not to mention the hdd/ ssd's are safe from harm.

Not sure how many times it will work it is all dependent on the machines power and usually laptops don't have a lot of that to spread around
It may work once and never again
It may short out and corrupt the files being transferred or the system image being created
I would not expect much from 7.us purchase

Well, than I pay more and get something good, but the HP only has 2.0 USB ports.

This " Sabrent ECS-STU35K USB 2.0 to 3.5 inch IDE/SATA or Serial ATA Aluminium HARD Drive enclosure Case " that you mentionened looks very good. I will have to get it shipped from USA as they have many types in Europe but not that model.

At least I have something that I can re-use and will last.

If you see one similar one just post a link to it and we'll take a peak at it
Shipping from the u.s. doesn't sound cheap although the unit is pretty light weight.

One difference you will find when looking at enclosures is that a 2.5" drive enclosure can be powered from USB while a 3.5" enclosure cannot because USB supplies only 5VDC which is all that a 2.5" drive requires. A 3.5" drive requires both 5VDC and 12VDC so cannot be powered from a USB port.

Since you have a 2.5" drive from a laptop, make sure you get an enclosure that is made for 2.5" drive only and you will not need any external power.

This is what I`ve been saying all along, she does not need a 3.5" enclosure to get the job done she wants to do, let`s help her get the job done as cheaply as possible, either with just a cable or an inexpensive 2.5" enclosure, that`s all she needs for now.
