Hi I have a sony vaio which originally came with windows vista but my recovery disk is buggered! I installed windows 7 when I was sent a link from MS and I have been told about an offer to upgrade as I'm a student so I can get it pretty cheap.
Can I upgrade from my current windows 7 (evaluation) to Windows 7 premium or do I need to have vista or XP installed before I can do so.

I would like to do a clean install I want to start out fresh.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Hey JS

First RC (7100) was ultimate version. Can you "upgrade" yes and no. You can do a clean install and that is recommended. You do not need to have either XP or vista installed.

Let us know if we can help you

Thank you for the reply, much appreciated. Can I do this if I buy the Windows 7 Professional upgrade package?

This? if you mean upgrade as apposed to clean install it would have to be Ultimate (7100) to ultimate (7600)

There is a workaround to do an in-place Upgrade from a greater to a lesser version of Windows 7. It has specific instructions for using the RC: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/...ate-or-professional-to-less-premium-editions/

There was strong advice from MS not to attempt to in-place Upgrade the RC, however enough people have reported doing it successfully using the workaround that it might be worth a try.

If you aren't happy with the performance, you can always do the superior clean install by booting from the DVD and formatting the drive first. You can hold off on activating for 30 days to test it.

As always, be sure to back up your files before any install as they can fail.
