Solved Can I upgrade?

Hi

My notebook came with Home Basic. I want to upgrade it to home premium. (edit: its vista)

I already have a Home Premium installer DVD and a license code. So that said, not an "Anytime upgrade" disc or code, but a full retail one. The one that comes with a box.

I want to *upgrade* keeping all settings drivers programs etc in place. Just like I could with anytime upgrade.


I thought of hot-running the installer (by opening it inside windows, not booting from it) and using upgrade in such a way as I would upgrade OS.

Would that work? Would it keep my stuff?



Note: I have image backup so dont worry its not your problem if I lose something I have backed up everything.

According to several posts I've seen, you can use your retail Windows 7 Home Premium key to do an Anytime Upgrade.

It's Home Premium to Pro but Home Basic to Home Premium SHOULD be the same.

Try it, nothing to lose.

Click START and and type Windows Anytime Upgrade and press Enter.
Select Enter an Upgrade Key.

And how about Vista? I have a computer where I want to do the same thing, but with Vista.

I know Anytime Upgrade works great on Win7 but I can't really get it to work on Vista. The only clickable option in that window is this: "Compare different Vista editions - lists the services available across different editions". When I click that, it takes me to the download page of Windows 7 ugprade advisor. What? thats not what I wanted lol.

Since anytime upgrade doesn't really work on Vista, do you think my method (inserting the installer DVD and doing an upgrade from that disc) would work? Will that keep everything?

Doing what you describe is called a Repair Install. It will leave your data intact unless something goes badly wrong, but you will have to reinstall some software, specifically anti-virus and MS Office. Not sure what else will be affected.

Anytime Upgrade is only meant to unlock a higher version in Win7.

You'll need a retail Upgrade or Full version Product Key. All that's available now is OEM which will also work, although technically it locks to the first mobo it is installed upon.

I would not even consider doing an upgrade from Vista.
