Can I use a router to convert to a wireless-b signal?

Yeah that should be OK. Set the router to get its IP Auto from the schools DHCP server. It should get that 128.x.x.x IP address.

I just thought of something. If I do this, will I still get the school's login redirect? (which would stop my ds from logging on)

Yes you may although you may be able to set the router up to Log on. Not sure. Ask around to others that have a router connected.
