How do I convert a spare wireless router to a wireless access point

In a few days time I will be changing my ISP in the UK from Sky to BT.

BT are providing me with their newest wireless router free of charge as part of the deal and I'll be using that to set up my wireless network, which will consist of an HP Pavilion desktop, a Toshiba laptop, a Sony Vaio laptop, an HP wireless printer and a Samsung HDTV.

This means my Sky wireless router is surplus to requirements, so I was wondering if I could convert it to a wireless access point to improve the range of my BT wireless network.

If so, how do I go about it?

I've read a couple of supposedly easy-to-understand articles on Google and have to say they left me more confused than ever.

Is there a straightforward way of doing this?

My new equipment arrives on Friday (27th) so I'll spend some time over the weekend setting things up.

some isp's (eg BT) cripple their routers so it won't work with other providers or as an access point. i hope for your sake that sky don't have a similar policy.

for reasons i won't go into, i have two bt homehubs and three bt business hubs - i can't use any of these as an access point. luckily i found an old netgear router in the local recycling centre for £5, and it works fine as a range extender.

I think you may be right about the Sky router as I believe the user name and password they use to update their firmware is hard wired into the router settings. I believe there is a way round to access this information and Sky threaten to disconnect anyone who uses it, but as I'm leaving Sky I have no worries on that score.

However, I do have a perfectly good Netgear router I can use.

If you did a search on Ebay for sky routers you will find loads that have been fixed .

Regarding using it as repeater/bridge/access point I'm afraid can only suggest google .
