Can I use onboard graphics with graphics card

I was wondering is it possible to use onboard graphics from my motherboard and use my graphics card at the same time? Also my motherboard states that the onboard graphics is dependent on the cpu. What exactly does this mean how does my cpu effect the onboard graphics

Do you mean Hybrid CrossFireX/SLi? That's what keep IGPU and Discrete GPU from working away from each other and instead work together to gain performance boost.

It's similar on some nVidia cards. I have the 630M, which supports Optimus, meaning that my laptop uses onboard graphics for the system and applications, while the nVidia card is used for more graphically intense stuff like games and HD video.

And as far as I know, aren't all motherboards required to have some kind of onboard graphics or something. I mean, if you don't have any onboard graphics, how do you install Windows and the driver required for the actual video card?

Okay, I was hoping for an error code with it.

Lets try this. Power down and remove your discrete card. Power up into your bios and set it for IGD and go into windows. Then try installing the latest vga driver from MSI. If this works, the power down and re install the discrete gpu.

I have updated my system specs. Now can you tell me if my cpu allows for onboard graphics. Also I wonder if I was to disable my GPU in the windows device manager will it then reinstall or attempt to install the onboard drivers ? Also their is a dvi port on my GPu if I purchased A DVI TO Vga convertor

Okay, it is confusing if we have the right cpu that we are talking about. I asked for the cpu-z screenshot to verify. Looking at your updated specs if this link is right, it has no onboard graphics

Only if you connect it to the correct DVI port. One of the DVI ports on the card will be digital only (DVI-D), and the other will/should be digital and analogue (DVI-I). If you connect it and it doesn't work, just switch it to the other DVI port.

Hi there
Some mobos have a setting to Enable or Disable the onboard graphics. You need the manual to see how to set the option you want.

I'm not sure if any of these mobos allow the use of BOTH cards -- in some cases where you have a Hardware passthru you can create some type of "Bare Metal" Virtual machine which will allow the use of different graphics cards - but that's way beyond the scope of this post -- you need to get into things like using ESXi -- quite a complex topic.

The only issue I see with the BIOS having a setting to disable the onboard/built-in video is what will happen if you remove the Add-in video card or it suddenly fails, won't be able to see anything without first resetting the BIOS.
