NEVER MIND !
and I feel sorta stupid....
I dug out my spare graphics card and drug the machine out to where I could get to it.
I started disconnecting cables and there was a VGA cable connected to the onboard graphics port .....
The DVI-D was connected where it was supposed to be.
I have no idea how the machine had been booting and working as well as it had, to only decide to quit now.

In my defense, I have this one antique Garmin that connects to that weird antique port that does resemble a VGA.
When I was reconnecting things a few weeks ago, I thought I wasreconnecting the Garmin cable, when I actually was connecting the VGA.
The other end of that VGA must still be connected to my monitor --- it has three possible ports, VGA, DVI-D, and HDMI.

Read my initial panic below.

I restarted my DELL Optiplex 780 mini-Tower.
It will not get past a message telling me that the monitor is connected to onboard graphics --- it is NOT.

I have made several attempts to get past this to no avail.

All was fine before the restart (for several weeks).

Please help.
