Solved Can More Ram do good?

Hey Guys Im quite a noob at these kind of things so I'm just asking for some opinions.


I've got a aspire 4736ZG with:
Intel pentium processor T4300 2.1ghz
NVIDIA geforce g105m
4 GB (2+2)

This all started out with me wanting to be able to download more kb/s, and i heard that it matters on how big your RAM is (i might be wrong). So then I looked up in the internet if i couldn't upgrade my laptop to a 8GB (4+4) instead of a 4GB (2+2). I thought that could help a lot but i did some more research and somewhere it said that even if you upgrade you RAM, you wont be able to use it to your full potential because of other components .... Anyways Im quite confused but my basic question is if your able to download quicker?

Download speed is primarily determined by your service provider. Increasing your ram will not substantially increase that speed.

What speed does your ISP say you should be getting?

Yup Ram has bugger all to do with your internet speed..line congestion etc etc does.

Well, It says that the its able to do around 56mbps. But still not that sure

The 54 Mb is the maximum transfer speed from one computer to another on the same network not how fast your internet connection is.

Who is your ISP?

You can check your download speed at speedtest.net. That will tell you what your download speed is.

Ok, I ran 2 tests and it averaged at about .5mbps for download and .2mbs for upload, however when i do download it never downloads more than 300kbps

It never will reach that speed. Lots of factors effect download speed.
Also there's a difference between kilobytes per second and kilobits per second. Internet is measured in kilobits or megabits not kilobytes/megabytes.

300kbps is good from a 500kbps connection so I'd be happy at that, admitedly its a slow connection as it is, but exchange distance and geographic location play a role in internet speed.

Also if the download source doesn't have sufficient bandwidth, or has a lot of incomming connections you'll get reduced speeds as well.

Plus most major service providers will throttle users at peak times. So its best to download things over night, a good download manager will help you schedule your downloads.

My understanding, like everyone else here, is that Internet speed is not affected by RAM.

More RAM is really useful if you run a large number of programs simultaneously. If you are just running a program or two at a time then less or more RAM is not going to make much of a difference.
