Can my system run Windows 7?

I've decided to try out Windows 7 on my own system. But before doing that, I need some important information. Will my system be able to run Windows 7? Currently, it runs a Linux distribution (Fedora) and it runs very well on it. I plan to do a clean install of Win7. Will Windows 7 perform reasonably smoothly on a PC with the following specs:

Pentium D with 2 cores @3.00 GHz
512MB DDR2 RAM (I've read in many places that people have run Windows 7 nicely on systems with that much RAM, is that true?)
Intel D945GCCR Motherboard
128 MB of Intel video memory (not sure of the model number)

Is my hardware up to the match to run Windows 7? If so, will it run smoothly without crashing too much?

Hi Muhammad and welcome to Se7en Forums

Should install and run fine; however for best results you will need to increase the amount of RAM. Why not give it a go and see what happens?

hi muhammad,

i agree with dwarf - you should be okay, but it will run so much better with more ram...

why not try a dual-boot for a while to see how it goes?

Muhammed

It will run win 7 but some of the more complicated video effect may not run. I have a dell with similar cpu, video and 1 gig of ram and it runs fine. If you think you could afford to upgrade your ram it would be a big improvement

MS has a Win7 advisor on site. it does check your current system and all installed. what id does is tell if there will be any problems. I do highly recommend you go to MS Site and download the Win7 advisor.

Thanks for the warm welcome!:)
I think I'll try Windows 7 before adding any RAM; better to see if it runs smoothly than add more RAM before even knowing that. If it runs too slowly, I'll think of something else to do.
Yes, I might dual-boot it with my Linux OS.

I'm not too sure that many are running Win7 smoothly with just 512MB of RAM. It might be possible, but I can pretty much assume that performance will be minimal.

It certainly won't harm to add more RAM. Even your Linux OS should feel the benefit.

Hi Muhammad,

Like Dwarf said and you already suspected, 512mb isn't much.

I would go even a little further. It's no use running Win7 on 512mb.
The OS will run on it and as long as you only run the OS it will run fine,
but what's the use of an OS if you can't run your programs on it?
You won't be very productive with it.

DDR2 ram is still very cheap, so I recommend installing at least 2gb.

Another problem might be your Intel graphics.
You stand a big chance you won't be able to use Aero (the translucent shell).
My laptop doesn't run it either, but I don't miss it.

So if you go for it, upgrading the ram is a must, really.

Greet and good luck.

Yes, I've been a pretty hard-core Linux user for some time now. :D
But I need to run many applications (programming etc.) which wouldn't run on Linux. And I heard about Windows 7. I wanted to try out something other than Windows XP, and I was sure my machine couldn't run Vista without BSODing on me every 5 minutes, so I thought of Win7.
Anyway, I'm off to bed now.

I too am a Linux user..but have always been a Windows and Linux user for years. I'm not really sure that there is anything within Windows 7 that would sell me on running Windows and windows only. I don't find it that much different from XP or Vista....it's just a well running conglomeration of the Windows feature set. The issues that have plauged Windows in the past, will still continue with 7 (cost, activation, spyware, viruses, defragging, registry issues, and higher system requirements than some lighter-weight Linux distros wouldn't have).

Hi Muhammad,

I guess the only way to find out if Win7 runs satisfactory for your needs, is to try it out.

Just make a good backup of your present OS, so you can turn back.

Good luck, and please post back the results to us.
