Can not even open "my computer" after trying to fix corrupted profile
I have a Windows 7 desktop.
This is the order of events:
I got home today, turned on my computer, logged into my single profile on my computer.
I could not log in, message said "User Profile Service Failed to check-in" (roughly translated from Finnish)
I started my computer in safemode, followed instructions I found and tried fixing the problem by setting a few
numbers in regedit to 0.
It worked, I could log in, but:
- Most things were missing from my desktop
- All shortcuts gone
- Start menu lacking
- Browser (Chrome) bookmarks and settings gone
- Other personal settings also seemed to be gone
I looked it up and seems like the profile is corrupted. I followed the following advice:
- I went into the "users" folder, and made it show all possible files/folders within the folder
- I created two new profiles, one which would become my new one, one for moving everything from the old one to the new one
- I cut everything from the old (my original) user folder to the new one I created and replaced any overlapping files within, except I didn't copy the already existing folders by default, rather I copied the contents of those folders (pictures, music, documents etc) into the folders that existed in the new profile, including a systemfile called "desktop" which seemed to exist in more or less every folder. The only files I didn't touch were the ones starting with "ntuser." I decided to cut because I only have 90 gb left on my harddrive, and the user folder contained over 800 gb.
-I also made the new profile an admin
-After this was done, I deleted my old profile (though, just in case, I told it to save any created files in a new folder), rebooted the computer, and logged into the new one.
The new profile started up promising, as my original wallpaper was back, my desktop icons had returned, though taskbar, browser, menu-settings etc were still not the same. However, I encountered a much more severe problem, as I am unable to start ANY software, open any file, I can't even open "my computer" or "control panel"... the message ""Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file" error pops up.
I am rather afraid right now. I hope I posted this in the right place, as I am anxious for guidance... Insanely huge thanks to all of you in advance. I truly hope I haven't screwed up too bad.
Happy weekend fellas,
