Solved Can not open .exe files.

I have a problem opening up .exe files/programs, after I had reinstalled Windows 7. Basically any program I try to open from the desktop icon or in the Start Menu (Firefox, IE, Microsoft Office, etc.), will give me the "Open with" prompt and I have to choose a program. The same happens when I try to open any .exe file. The program does not open when I choose a program from the "Open With" prompt. For example, if I try to open up IE, the "Open With" prompt displays the file to be opened as "iexplore.exe" and I choose the IE icon to try and open it. When I select the IE icon, I get a file download prompt (file name: iexplore, from C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer). If I choose run, I go back to the "Open With" prompt. If I choose save, it just saves an icon on my desktop (clicking on that icon will result in the "Open With" problem). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you so much Jacee, I was working on a family member's computer to get out a fake antivirus but after I removed that I couldn't run any .EXE files so I couldn't install an antivirus or do any kind of cleanup, this quick fix got everything back to normal and allowed me to get the computer up and running in no time.

Sometimes after removing that fake anitvirus crap and left in this state you can right click the shortcut or exe file and choose run as administrator and it will use default built in admin associations and run the program so you can then download and apply the fix.

To parratt1

Hello Parratte1, The only thing that I could tell you to do is to go over to a friend's house or something and download the files onto a flash drive.

Jacee .. you are the savior

Jacee.. you are a savior ... you don't know how much you have helped me today. I even talked to Microsoft helpline those people even could not help. All they were interested in was $99 for consultation. Thanks a lot.
