Solved Can not open programs/.exe files

I ran Avast to see if I had any problems with my computer (I hadn't checked in a while, wasn't exeriencing any problems though.) It said something about restarting/next startup after it had finished scanning and I clicked "chest"? (is that what it's called). I turned off my laptop and went to sleep. Today I can not open exe files/ run any programs. The usual programs/services that I normally had in the background are not working either. I can not open any web browsers or repair software to help me. I am typing this on my iPod to get some help. Anybody got any ideas?

Hello ElDiablo, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if you may be able to do a system restore at boot using a restore point dated before this happened to hopefully fix it.

After seeing 2 other threads on the same thing here in just a few hours, it looks like Avast is mentioned in each one. Seems it might be Avast, or it's definitions causing corruption.

After trying Airbot's suggestion, download MS Security Essentials (see my sig for link) and set it to run on a schedule, say, twice per week. The baddies are always lurking.
