Can slow interent be a sign of a modem going bad?

I've tried 3 different browsers on both Windows 7 & Linux Mint (dual boot configuration), I get the same results on all 3 browsers, on both OS's.

It's happening all over. The three sites that I know for sure where I've tried downloading are majorgeeks, filehippo (or maybe filehorse?), and also a Linux Mint iso file (I dual boot, sorry!) from a university website relatively close to where I live.

I do think I am coming closer to a resolution on this. Will keep updated.

Well it's been a while since I last posted here in this thread. Here's what happened in that time (hope my memory isn't failing me). The first thing I did since my last post was to go to my local "big-time" retailer and buy a CenturyLink modem. I came home and set it up, and . . . no difference, still had slow downloads. So I called tech support again, and this time they sent a technician over. Of course it was during the day while I was at work. So when I came home I found out he connected a new modem, same model as the one I just bought a few days before. And I still had slow download speeds. The tech guy had left his cell number, so I called him up and told him. He said the next thing to do would be to check the phone lines leading up to the home. He said he would put the work-ticket in so I didn't have to call their tech number again. I assume he did. I waited a few days and still had slow downloads, so I called once again (by this time I really had no patience left). The lady ran some tests, ran it by her supervisor, and said that there was a bunch of errors coming from the modem. She said she was going to send another one. Of course I didn't believe this would solve the problem, I already had tried two new modems. Finally I said okay. So two working days later, I got the modem and connected it. This time, the speed returned to where it is supposed to be, and even a little bit faster than before. However, I noticed this is not the case on all sites. Before all this started, I never noticed a difference no matter what site I was downloading on. And another thing, before, the speeds would stay mostly constant; but now they seem to fluctuate more. So, it isn't quite the same as before, but I guess this problem is solved. But I don't feel like it's 100% solved. I don't know whether I should just leave it as it is now, or call their tech support again.

I have Qwest\Century Link ... It's not the fastest DSL, but much better than dial-up, which I had before they came into my area of the 'boonies'.

Tell me what browser you use. Also, the 'add-ons' you're using in that browser.

I use three different browsers on my dual-boot system (the other OS I use is Linux Mint 17.2 MATE). I've tested this problem on both OS's and on all three browsers, so I know it's not a browser, add-on, or OS issue. But FTR, I use Palemoon as my main browser on both Windows and Linux. The add-ons I use for Palemoon (on both Windows and Linux) are: Adblock Latitude, NoScript, Adobe Flash, and Fox 2 The Moon theme. I don't use any add-ons for IE. (Is there such a thing as add-ons for IE?) For Firefox, which I only use as a backup on Linux, I use uBlock, NoScript, and Adobe Flash.

The tech that set me up for Qwest/Century Link said I could get as much as 256 MB .. I don't get that much, but it's still better than dial-up.

BTW, "get as much as 256 MB" didn't mean it will.... the 'kicker' is
could.

I don't know your situation; I only know mine using IE11.

We can run a couple of tests, if you'd like to do that (adware, etc)

Hi Jacee, thanks for the offer, but I'm pretty up on how to detect this kind of stuff, and more importantly, how to keep it off in the first place, so I'm sure that malware, adware, etc., are not the problem.
