I have multiple HDD's and External USB drive/partitions on my system. When doing a system image restore...should I exclude all my drives as indicated in the following jpg ? I certainly do NOT want to reformat anything but the current C: drive for the image restore operation ?

6.
Check Format and repartition disks, and click on Next. (see screenshot below)

7. Click on Finish. (see screenshot below)

Thanks....TR

Well what that Check mark says to me is, it is going to wipe all drives it finds and image the system according to the restore file.

So, yeah I would be careful. I would also click the Exclude Disks if you can and make sure all other disks are excluded.

If however, it is refering the the drives as part of the restore image, then you should be OK.

But, I always say,, rather be safe than sorry. Disconnect drives you are not wanting to be affected.

Tepid,

The checkmarked item is misleading.

Don't worry, Win 7 is not going to go out and reformat and repartition every hard drive it finds on you system.

The statement is misleading.

So,, similar to Acronis, it is only referring to the drives that it has backed up in the image?

OK guys...thanks to all...I got to that point in the image restore process but the Format and Repartition Disks was grayed out and not possible to click...??...does this me the restore is simply overwriting my C: drive...or did it automatically do a format first before beginning image restore ?

And just think. In a matter of minutes, the restore will be finished and you will have your answer.

Yep...your'e right...the system seems to be restored to the image date state...which did solve a MAJOR problem with my HP printer/fax..etc.

But not being very tech savvy tho...I still don't know if the image overwrote the C: drive...or if indeed the system also formatted the C: drive before image restore ?

Also if I don't restore the data files backup in the initial pop up window after restart...can I later add them...some or all...if I find something indeed is missing I need them...?...and where will they be stored ?

Thanks...TR

The imaging process does not just overwrite a drive.
It should have formatted the drive first automatically and then write the image to it.

Tepid,
The Win 7 Restore is not going to format unless needed or you leave the box checkmarked re formatting.

Win 7 restore is very smart but will let you override where you will not shoot yourself in the foot at the same time.

What is always true is that the Win 7 restore will never do anything foolish, and actually will prevent you from making a harmful choice.

I've had times where I could chose the format and times where I couldn't depending up the state of the drive chosen to receive the restore.

I simple put my blind faith and trust in Win 7 restore (not really, I guarantee you that I tested and checked all permutations and combinations so that I would know whether Win 7 Backup and Restore could receive my 100% recommendation.)
