Can someone explain how temps work for a gpu?

Ok, I turn off my pc, for an hour. I figure ok, it will cool down, right? NOPE. The thing stays at the temp I left it on? Why is that? I would figure turning it off would drop it to room temp, but its hotter than that :s

Are you saying it returns to the load temp or unloaded temp? What program are you using to determine the temp? Fumz is correct, I'm just wondering which temp. Also an hour, I wouldn't think would be long enough for the whole system to return to "room temp" since all the components will need to disapate heat as well as the case itself. Without any fans blowing to remove the heat it will take some time for it to gradually cool to room temp.JMO Fabe

you might want ot throw soem extra fans in your case if you want it running cooler, mine usually stays just above room temp and my gpu is about 85F

To the others, an hour is more than enough time for the heat to dissipate to standard temperatures. How long does it take for your oven to cool off after baking at 400F? No more than an hour really.

Its above idle temp. Ok, I turned it off with 60c temp. Its still 60c when I turn it back on after an hour. Its weird. Unless the temp program is wrong, because it usually drops to idle temp after 5 minutes.

Tom's must be half retarded, because in my kind of hot room my card idles 38 - 40c, and before the heat kicked up, it idled 30 - 34c. This is with Aero. I wonder if it get cooler by turning aero off.

Here may be something. I have a sapphire, not asus. The fan is quite larg and covers at least 2 ram chips and partials of others. Might just be a damn good fan. Anyway, I just found it odd that it stays at the same or near same temp as when I turn it off, but it could be that the censors didn't reset, and its cooler than gpu temp progs think. Tested with and without aero BTW, and saw no difference in temps.

edit: Could GPUz be wrong? Could it actually be heated to 80c and not only 40c?

It also shows the same temps as CPUZ and the ATI gfx temp gadget I got. Guess my card is really ice cold compared to others, but I think mine has newer firmware because I believe older 4850 did not UC when on 2d apps.

From what little reading I did on this, it seems that driver updates fixed the "issue" to some degree or another... but again, that line just runs hotter than most. That you have two fans probably explains why your temps are much lower?

well before my room became a sauna, It was 50c mostly. Now its highest is 61c. I play all games with at least AA 8x, so that doesn't help the heat, but it seems not bad. This whole thread was just me puzzled that turning it off didn't drop the temps some.

Yea I know. Thats why it doesnt bother me, but still, It just didnt make sense, because the cpu cooled from 46c turning off after medium load, to 32c ._.

Ok well, it now gets a top temp of 60c playing games. It used to not, but it was also on xp, and I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. It stays colder than usual, and I keep the fan amped to 50% with msi afterburner, because VPU recovery causes crashing sometimes. Guess I need to stop being paranoid. Although, I left it off over night and yet again the gfx card doesnt cool off, but the cpu and all does, go figure.

60C while gaming is excellent temperatures, the new Fermi cards idle at that temperature. Don't worry about it.

Its hard to be paranoid. This is the first real pc I have had in, forever. My last GFX card was a 7300LE ;-;

My graphics card hits 70C ever time I play any game, and it's a 5770 which are supposed to be the cooler cards. Don't freak till it hits 90C.

As for artifacting, well that occurs from overclocking. If you bought a factory overclocked card, return it as defective, if you bought a stock card, you may be able to return it as defective, and if you're OCing yourself, then reduce your OC.
